Two Stags in Winter Landscape, Twilight Oil on Canvas, Dated 1912

1912

About the Item

Stags in Winter Twilight (American, early 20th century) Both dated l. r. "1912" 38 1/2 x 12 1/2 inches The stag is the king of the forest, the protector of all other creatures. For the native tribes of North America, the deer was a messenger, an animal of power, and a totem representing sensitivity, intuition and gentleness as well as fertility. A deer’s antlers may represent spiritual superiority. Like a crown, the antlers grow beyond the body of the deer, bringing it closer to the sky and therefore making it sacred. In many cultures, the deer is a symbol of spiritual authority. During a deer’s life the antlers fall off and grow again, and the animal is therefore also seen as a symbol of regeneration. In Christian iconography, the deer appears as a symbol of piety, devotion, and is used to symbolise God taking care of his children. The legend of St Eustace, for example, tells the story of the Roman general Placido who, before becoming a saint, was out hunting and came across a magnificent, enormous deer. When Placido looked at the animal’s eyes, the light of Christ shone out of them and the voice of God spoke to him through them. Placido, gave up hunting and became a Christian, becoming famous as St Eustace. In ancient times, kingship was often defined by the hunt for a stag. The boundaries of the kingdom would be where the hunt ended, and the man who slayed the stag would be king.

“Summer in the Pasture (Farmer’s Wife with Cow)” Julius Paul Junghanns
Located in SANTA FE, NM
“Summer in the Pasture (Farmer’s Wife with Cow)” (Sommertag auf der Weide (Bäuerin mit Kuh)) Paul Junghanns (German, 1876-1958) Oil on Canvas 36 ¼ x 28 inches (43 ¾ x 35 ¼) This is a superb painting. On Junghann's finest pieces, such as this one, base colors are used, in the case of the cow, it's a vermillion undercoat, and then myriad colors are applied building up to what your eyes perceive as more uniform and naturalistic colors though it's rather a trompe l'oeil in that it's many different colors and many different layers. You can see the beautiful brush strokes very clearly. Julius Paul Junghanns...

Alfred Augustus Glendening, Sunlit River Landscape With Cattle & Ducks
By Alfred Augustus Glendening Senior
Located in Cheltenham, GB
This charming late 19th-century oil painting by British artist Alfred Augustus Glendening (1840-1921) depicts a picturesque river landscape with cattle and ducks. Born in Hampton on Thames, London, Glendening was raised in an area popular with Victorian artists. The river, with its zig-zagging steamboats and silvery waters, providing ample inspiration for a young impressionable mind. This fascinating environment delivered the building blocks for his artistic development, and one can imagine him sketching on the riverbank along with other painters. It would take a little time before he turned to art as a career but, once he pursued his calling, success was inevitable. Travel during the mid-19th century was becoming a little easier thanks to the emerging rail network, and Glendening filled his sketchbooks on various cross-country trips. In 1864, he debuted at The Royal Society of British Artists with a view from Cumbria’s picturesque Lake District. And the following year, he exhibited ‘A Cornfield, Kent’ at the Royal Academy. Many of his works were centred around shimmering water with the Isle of Wight another frequent destination. Soon, the rising middle classes took note and he quickly became a firm favourite. With views in North Wales, the Highlands, Surrey, and Devon captured with a deft touch. His approach was predominantly naturalistic and lacked the grandiosity of many early Victorian painters. His tranquil vignettes are skilfully observed with dapples of light dancing across reflected foliage. The occasional bird picked out with weight and movement. Here, in this picturesque sunlit view from 1896, he captures nature at her most buoyant. Cattle cool off under a prominent beech tree as the surface of the skilfully-handled river flickers into life. Glendening’s exquisite draughtsmanship was matched by a keen understanding of tone and value - resulting in balanced compositions with blissful moods. By 1903, he’d exhibited 47 works at the Royal Academy. Quite an achievement for a late starter. Today, various museums hold examples including at Southampton and Newport. Signed/dated lower left and held within a later frame. Provenance: Private collection, Germany. Artist’s auction maximum: £32,000 for ‘Bramber Castle’, Oil on canvas, Christie’s, 19th Century Pictures...
