About the Item

Heather St. Clair Davis (1937-1999) In Full Flow Signed lower right Oil on canvas Canvas size 22 x 28 in Framed size 27 x 33 in Provenance Sold by Frost & Reed Galleries, London. Heather St. Clair Davis (1937–1999) was a British-born artist and accomplished equestrian, best known for her evocative paintings of horses and countryside landscapes. Raised in the Cotswolds village of Whittington, she developed a love of both art and horses early in life. After studying art in Cheltenham, she later moved to Vermont, USA, where she continued to pursue her twin passions—painting and riding—on a working farm. Her work frequently depicts rural scenes, traditional hunts, and horses in motion, rendered with a keen understanding of anatomy and movement. This insight came from her years of experience as a rider, breeder, and international judge in Three-Day Eventing and dressage. Her paintings are marked by authenticity, elegance, and a quiet energy that reflects her deep connection to the equestrian world. Alongside her studio practice, Heather also taught art and remained active in the competitive equestrian scene well into her later years. Her painting Turn and Canter Down (1993), an offset lithograph of horses rounding a fence, is a fine example of her dynamic composition and technical skill. Heather’s works have been sold at various auctions, with prices ranging from modest sums to several thousand dollars. One of her highest recorded sales was for Out Hunting, which fetched nearly $7,000 in 2019. Through her art, Heather St. Clair Davis captured the grace and spirit of the countryside she loved. Her legacy endures in the enduring charm and vitality of her paintings.
