About the Item

Henry Garland (fl.1854-1900) Watching over baby signed 'H. GARLAND.' (lower left) Oil on canvas Painting Size - 14 x 18 in Framed Size - 20 x 24 in Provenance The Collection of Charlie Watts. Charlie Watts, the legendary drummer of The Rolling Stones, was renowned not only for his musical prowess but also for his profound affection for animals, particularly Collies. He and his wife, Shirley, resided at Halsdon Manor in Devon, where they managed a stud farm for Arabian horses. Their estate was also home to numerous dogs, reflecting their deep commitment to animal welfare. Henry Garland was a British painter known for his sensitive and often sentimental portrayals of rural life, animals, and equestrian subjects. Born in 1834, Garland trained at the Royal Academy Schools and developed a style that blended academic precision with a warm, narrative charm that appealed to Victorian tastes. Although not as widely known today as some of his contemporaries, Garland exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy from the 1850s onward. His paintings often depicted tranquil countryside scenes, portraits of horses and dogs, and touching domestic moments—subjects that resonated with 19th-century collectors who valued both technical skill and emotional content. One of Garland’s strengths was his ability to capture the gentle nobility of animals, particularly horses and working dogs, often portraying them in harmonious relationship with humans. His compositions displayed a quiet dignity, celebrating the bond between people and animals with a tender realism. Garland also contributed to the world of art education, teaching and mentoring younger artists. His careful draughtsmanship and refined palette made his work a model of understated excellence during the height of Victorian genre painting. He passed away in 1913, having built a steady, respected career as a painter whose works reflected the gentler aspects of rural and domestic life. Today, Henry Garland is remembered as an artist of empathy and skill, whose paintings continue to offer a window into the humane and idealized vision of the Victorian countryside.
