Henry Koehler
One of the top sporting artists in the world, Henry Koehler was born in Louisville, Kentucky. He attended Yale University and his long association with the sporting life began soon after his graduation from Yale. His illustrations appeared in The New Yorker, Town & Country and Sports Illustrated. His first exhibition was in 1961 and since that time he has had 67 one-man A exhibitions in London, Paris, Dublin, Johannesburg and throughout the United States. Racing and hunting come alive under his brush. He also offers us a behind-the-scenes look at jockeys, horses, dogs and the special accoutrements of each sport. Among his collectors are prominent people from the political, social and sports arenas. His works can be seen at the National Racing Museum in Saratoga and at the National Horse Racing Museum at Newmarket in Great Britain. Mr. Koehler lives in Southampton, New York. "He has painted several commission portraits of well-known thoroughbreds but prefers genre pieces depicting horse racing, polo, and hunting in the field with horses. He also does studies of jockey figures before and after their race. An July-October 2003 exhibition, Elegant Impressions of Turf and Field, was held at the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. He was a figure and animal painter who was based originally in Bradford, where he lived until 1885, when he moved to Edwinstowe, near Mansfield, Nottingham. In 1901 he moved to Hampstead and then back north to Harrogate where he stayed until his death. In his later years he became a picture dealer, but in his will he referred to himself as ‘animal painter’.
Barker became a member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1896. Although he called himself an animal painter he is also known to have painted ‘Roman Maidens...
