About the Item
German Shorthair Pointer, contemporary minimal dog portrait black and white acrylic on canvas. England's Ian Mason's portraits of dogs are very striking as he is able to capture the form of each dog breed with minimal brush strokes. His start as a sculptor is evident with his unique, minimal paintings of dogs. Viewers always exclaim that he captures each dog's personality perfectly for each breed. The artist's black and white canvas paintings are gallery wrapped therefore framing is not necessary. But framing the dog painting in a white floater frame is often used.. Framing options are available.

Ian Mason
Ian Mason was born in Brighton, East Sussex, in the United Kingdom in 1972. His formal education was with the University of Northumbria at Newcastle, BA (HONORS). He received a degree in Fine Art (sculpture) – 1995 at the University of Brighton and later a Post Graduate Diploma in Interior Design – 2000. His interest lies in the structure and process of turning a subject into an image and the importance of the materials with which he works. You will notice that every mark he makes, although at first appearing loose and uncontrolled is actually very carefully laid down. His technique of thin washes and bold lines on the pristine canvas does not allow for error. Ian admires the work of the great Minimalists, Carl Andre, Donald Judd and the likes of Bruce Nauman especially in their use of process & truth to materials. Ian’s work can be seen as minimal & often raw but this allows for a fresh approach of viewing the canine subject - especially profound as this type of imagery is so often overproduced & over sentimental. His paintings elevate ‘man’s best friend’ to the intelligent and considering animals they really are. Take time to look into them and you will be rewarded with a depth of sensitivity rarely seen in contemporary art. “The work I make often involves showing the process or procedure of making. This results in a possibly ‘unfinished’ state, but I hope this engages & makes the viewer bring their own memory/narrative to finish or construct the rest of the piece. The evidence of lines, rubbing out, mark making & drips also show this development of the image. The work is often produced in one sitting to achieve the freshness & the capturing of the image - producing a glimpse or outline. I try to reinforce this with the use of materials reducing the work to monochrome, therefore highlighting areas of form/shape & not getting involved with the associations/ connections of colors which could result in an overworked or overproduced image.” …….......................Ian Mason on his own paintings The paintings’ contemporary style has a strong impact on the viewer making his statement and devotion to dogs exquisitely clear. Ian Mason currently lives & works in Cornwall, UK.

Dalmatian dog oil painting
Located in Barcelona, Barcelona
Title: Dalmatian
Artist: José María Tuser Vázquez (Barcelona, 1919 – 1986)
Technique: Oil on canvas mounted on board
Dimensions: 43 x 32 cm (16.9 x 12.6 in)
Signature: Signed “Tuser” in the lower left corner
Support: Canvas mounted on board (reverse side unprimed and visible)
Condition: Good. Minor superficial scuffs, no loss of paint. Unframed.
Artistic Description
The work depicts the bust of a Dalmatian dog against a monochromatic coral-toned background, which contrasts sharply with the animal's black-and-white fur. The artist employs an impasto oil technique, with loose and dense brushstrokes that add energy and volume to the portrait. The dog’s reddish gaze conveys calm and presence, standing out for its restrained expressiveness.
The choice of a flat, saturated background enhances the painting’s modern aesthetic, focusing attention on the figure while avoiding unnecessary decorative elements. This visual synthesis is characteristic of Tuser’s expressive style, where plastic strength takes precedence over naturalistic detail.
Although primarily known for his bullfighting and folkloric scenes, Dalmatian reveals Tuser’s versatility in the genre of animal portraiture, with a painterly treatment reminiscent of certain contemporary figurative expressionist approaches.
About the Artist: José María Tuser Vázquez (1919–1986)
José María Tuser Vázquez was born in Barcelona in 1919 and trained at the School of Arts and Crafts in the Catalan capital. He was a prolific artist, specializing in bullfighting scenes, popular figures, and Mediterranean landscapes. His painting is characterized by confident brushwork, expressive use of color, and straightforward compositions that convey vitality.
He worked on various supports—canvas, board, cardboard—and also mastered techniques such as watercolor and ink. Throughout his career, he exhibited in galleries and fairs, and his works have been widely auctioned in Spain and France, including a record-breaking sale in 2025.
His style blends elements of Spanish costumbrismo with a modern sensibility, distancing itself from strict academicism. A portion of his work is known to be held in a dedicated collection in Nîmes (France), a city with strong ties to bullfighting.
