Portrait of the Long-Haired Black Labrador, 19th Century, English School

About the Item

Portrait of the Long-Haired Black Labrador, 19th Century, English School This distinguished portrait of a long-haired black Labrador is attributed to the circle of John Ferneley (1815-1862), a prominent British painter renowned for his exceptional animal paintings. The back of the wooden frame bears an inscription identifying the work as by Ferneley, along with details of its sale at a Bonhams auction in 1955, establishing its provenance. Dimensions: - With frame: 60 cm (height) x 68 cm (width) - Without frame: 41.5 cm (height) x 55 cm (width) Oil on canvas English school The painting captures the Labrador with remarkable precision, highlighting the texture and sheen of its long fur, as well as its distinctive expression and graceful posture. The background features bare trees and an autumnal landscape, a common element in Ferneley's work that adds seasonal and atmospheric depth to the composition while enhancing the prominence of the dog. The composition is thoughtfully designed to draw attention directly to the Labrador, using the autumnal setting to frame and complement the subject. The portrait carries a narrative quality, with the autumn setting and the Labrador's poised demeanor suggesting a story that reflects the dog's role and its environment, adding depth and context to the painting. The canvas for this portrait was supplied by Charles Roberson & Co., a highly respected art material supplier founded in 1828 in London. Known for the meticulous preparation of its canvases, Roberson & Co. served a prestigious clientele of artists, including notable figures such as J.M.W. Turner, John Constable, Edward Burne-Jones, and Dante Gabriel Rossetti. This association adds further historical value to the piece. Presented in a gilded wooden frame, the portrait adds a touch of elegance and complements the historical charm of the painting. This work stands as a significant example of period animal painting, reflecting the sophistication and taste of British and European high society of the time. It represents a valuable addition for collectors and enthusiasts of historical art.

English early 19th century painting of a chestnut hunter in a landscape
By John Ferneley Senior
Located in Bath, Somerset
A painting of a chestnut hunter in a landscape with a horse and rider accompanied by two hounds by a woodland river in the distance. Signed and inscribed 'Melton Mowbray', lower left. Oil on canvas in a giltwood frame. John Ferneley Sr (1782-1860) was born the son of a Leicestershire wheelwright, the youngest of six children. He is known as one of the great British equine artists, perhaps only second to Stubbs in terms of raw ability. Ferneley originally worked with his father, until by chance the Duke of Rutland saw some of his work on the side of a cart on which Ferneley and his father had been working. The Duke was so impressed with Ferneley that he persuaded John's father to allow him to become the pupil of Benjamin Marshall. Ferneley was so talented that apparently he produced almost perfect copies of his tutor's paintings and they were said to have been indistinguishable from the master’s. Marshall also enrolled him as a student of the Royal Academy Schools. In 1804 Ferneley paid a man named Thomas Harrison...
