About the Item
Michael Grimsdale (born 1936 in London) is a British artist known for his equestrian and sporting subjects, as well as portraits and landscapes. Raised in a military family, he spent parts of his childhood abroad in Hong Kong, Singapore, and South Africa. He later studied at Cheltenham College, RMA Sandhurst, and Saint Martin’s School of Art in London
Grimsdale’s career spans a wide array of commissions—from sports and portraiture to landscapes—often delivering works that reflect both technical precision and dynamic energy. His paintings have been exhibited at venues such as the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, Cowdray Park Polo Club, Newmarket’s Equus, and galleries in Sydney, Houston, Tangier, and Marrakech
His works are held in various esteemed locations, including the World Trade Club in Dubai, the Holocaust Museum in Chicago, the Museum of Music in Taiwan, and Apothecaries’ Hall in London. Sports institutions such as Harlequins FC, Bath Rugby Club, and Gleneagles also feature his paintings in their collections. He has further contributed illustrations to books and periodicals, and his drawings have appeared in Reader's Digest, Aramco World magazine, and in campaigns for J. Walter Thompson and Saatchi & Saatchi
.
In this energetic pastel, Michael Grimsdale captures the power and elegance of a horse in full stride, shown in profile as it runs with a jockey astride. The horse, depicted in rich brown tones, is modeled with sweeping strokes that emphasize the rhythm of its muscles and the flowing movement of its mane and tail. Its forward momentum fills the composition with vitality and speed.
The jockey, dressed in blue and yellow silks, leans forward in unison with the horse’s motion, his posture echoing the animal’s drive. Grimsdale’s handling of pastel allows for a vivid contrast between the bold colors of the silks and the warm natural tones of the horse.
The work embodies Grimsdale’s ability to combine anatomical precision with expressive freedom, using pastel’s softness to evoke atmosphere and energy. Rather than static portraiture, this piece celebrates the drama and immediacy of the racecourse, capturing a fleeting moment of harmony between rider and horse.
