English 19th century portrait of a dog, Spaniel with game bird in a landscape
Located in Woodbury, CT
This exquisite oil on canvas by Edwin Frederick Holt, depicting a black and white spaniel with a game bird, is a stunning example of Victorian sporting art, painted circa 1863. Holt's exceptional attention to detail brings the subject to life, from the textured fur of the spaniel to the fine feathers of the game bird and the naturalistic landscape in the background. The artist's ability to capture the loyal and determined expression of the dog highlights his skill in portraying both the beauty and character of animals.
For art collectors, this painting represents a piece of history, reflecting the 19th-century English tradition of celebrating hunting and companionship with animals through art. Edwin Frederick Holt's works are sought after for their authenticity and fine craftsmanship, making this a valuable addition to any collection of sporting or animal-themed artwork.
For interior designers, this piece offers a perfect blend of elegance and charm, suitable for a variety of settings. The warm tones of the landscape and the golden frame add richness to the painting, making it an ideal choice for classic or traditional interiors. It can become a focal point in a study, library, or living room, enhancing the atmosphere with its timeless sophistication.
For collectors of canine art, this painting is more than an aesthetic treasure—it is a heartfelt tribute to the enduring bond between humans and their canine companions. Its historical significance, combined with the artist's skill and the beauty of the composition, ensures it will remain a cherished and admired piece for generations to come.
in 1830, Edwin Frederick Holt grew up in Hampstead and went on to spend the majority of his adult life in Dunstable.
Edwin began his artistic career by studying at the Royal Academy of Art where he went on to win a Silver medal for his work at the age of 24. From this point on, his work continued to get recognized and many of his pieces were entered into exhibitions. In total, Edwin Frederick Holt exhibited 7 paintings at the RoyalAcademy, 12 at the British Institution and 40 at the Royal Society of Arts.
Alongside his exhibitions, Edwin Frederick Holt also illustrated in "Farm Animal Portraits...

'Attilla' A Chestnut Horse in a Stable. Oil on canvas
Located in St. Albans, GB
Canvas Size: 28 x 36" (71 x 91cm)
Outside Frame Size 36 x 44" (91 x 111cm)
It is signed on the middle right on the wooden window.
This is a stunning painting of a racehorse signed and dated J F Herring Sen 1842. The horse is named above the water trough as Attilla. As Herring was a renowned painter of racehorses it is likely that this was done for a wealthy patron who owned several. Although he painted many of the winners of the St. Ledger Cup Attilla was not one of these.

John Frederick HERRING Snr
1795 – 1865
A sporting painter, born in Surrey of American/Dutch extraction. At first he was a sign and coach painter. He then worked as a stable boy and coachman in Yorkshire until with the help of patrons he was able to study with Abraham Cooper RA, the only art education he appears to have had.
He specialised in racing subjects and his few hunting scenes are rare. Herring painted the start of the 1844 Derby, which became known as ‘the dirtiest Derby in history’. He sometimes collaborated with his three sons, J.F.Jnr, Benjamin Jnr and Charles. He also collaborated with James Pollard on a number of racing scenes inc. ‘The Doncaster Gold Cup’, 1838, ‘The Emperor of Russia’s Cup at Ascot’ 1845 and ‘The Dead Heat for the Doncaster Great St. Ledger’ 1849
Herring painted 33 successive winners of the St. Ledger and not surprisingly lived a large part of his life in the Doncaster area before settling in Newmarket in 1830 and then in London in 1835. He suffered serious financial difficulties after his move to London which, thanks to a great friend and patron William Taylor Copeland (1797 – 1868) head of the Spode Porcelain factory at Stoke on Trent, was resolved.
He painted many pictures of the Copeland family, some of which were adapted and used as designs on the Spode china...

Constable was born in East Bergholt, Suffolk on 11 June 1776 and attended a school in Lavenham and his father hoped he would enter the church. His father was adamant that he would not be a painter as a profession. He met a local man named John Dunthorne who painted local scenes, mainly in nearby fields. His love of all things natural stemmed from this. Later he copied works by Girtin from a book that was lent to him by Sir George Beaumont...
