Thomas Spencer (British, active c. 1740-1756) A Portrait of Flying Childers Oil on canvas With an incorrect label "a racehorse second at new market by John Wotton” With an indistinct inscription verso Property of a gentleman From the collection of Peter Roe Provenance: Christies Important English Pictures 20/11/1987, Circle of James Seymour, 'Flying Childers' held by a groom on Newmarket Heath. 'Flying (Devonshire) Childers, by 'The Darley Arabian' out of 'Betty Leedes' was the first great thoroughbred racehorse. He was bred in 1715 by Colnel Childers of Carr House, Doncaster and bought by the Duke of Devonshire for whom he won every time he started. He was considered the best racehorse ever seen in his day. After his racing career he retired to stud at Chatsworth and died in 1741. Purchased in 1987 at Christie’s by Peter Roe. Dimensions: (Frame) 45 in. (H) x 55.5 in. (W) (Canvas) 38.5 in. (H) x 49 in.
