The composition, set against a sweeping landscape with mountains and a calm river, emphasizes the harmonious interaction between the figures. The Virgin Mary, cloaked in a rich blue garment, tenderly watches over the Christ Child, who is seated on her lap. St. John the Baptist, as a young boy, kneels before them, holding a reed cross, symbolizing his future role as the forerunner of Christ.
