Figurative landscape of Wood Fairies kissing in a forest by Carl F. Ruhnau (German, c.1876-1940). Signed “C. Ruhnau” in the bottom right corner. Signed and dated "C. Ruhnau 14" on verso. Presented in a thick giltwood frame without glass. Image size: 23”H x 35”W
Carl F, Ruhnau was born about 1876 in Germany. Ruhnau emigrated to the US from Germany, was the father of the noted California post-modern architect Herman O. Ruhnau. At the end of his life in 1940, Ruhnau lived in Los Angeles, California with his wife Anna.
The existence of supernatural fairy-like beings was believed by virtually everyone across the social strata until the birth of Science during the Age of Enlightenment. The forest was home to many different types of forest spirits.
