About the Item

Oil on canvas painting by the Polish born artist, Ernest Kosmowski. The painting is done with palette knife and brush typical of his style and children theme in the 1960’s. Soft, pastel colors give this painting a lightness characteristic of his work during this period in Paris. Signed lower left. Signed and dated verso, 1967. Original wood and gilt frame in good condition. Overall measurements framed 19 by 15.5 inches. The painting has been recently cleaned with no restorations. Provenance: New York City estate. Ernest-Kosmowski was a graduate of the Warsaw School of Fine Arts, known in his country for his posters and his work as a decorator. He settled in Paris after the war, he stayed from 1960, during the summer season, in Honfleur where he opened a gallery. His pictorial research is inspired by expressionism and cubism, but his meeting with Bonnard, this subtle colourist, will bring light into his work. In the 1970’s Honfleur became his home port, Ernest-Kosmowski was then the painter of children and the joy of living.
