About the Item

In The Wool Winder, Emma Ekwall captures a moment of quiet domestic intimacy between a young woman and a man as they wind wool together—she with focused care, he with gentle attentiveness. The yarn, drawn from a basket at their feet, winds its way across the floor and through their hands, forming both a literal and symbolic thread of connection between them. The scene is rendered with remarkable clarity and warmth. Details such as the carefully painted porcelain vase, the folded blanket with floral print, and the rifle resting nearby add narrative richness and suggest a life beyond the frame. The woman’s face, delicately modeled and softly lit, becomes the emotional heart of the composition. Her thoughtful expression and modest posture invite the viewer to imagine what unspoken emotions might lie beneath the surface. Is this a simple household task, or a tender moment of courtship? Emma Ekwall was one of the earliest women to break into the Swedish academic art world. She studied at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts from 1865–1871, and in 1871 became the first woman to receive the Academy’s royal medal—a distinction that marks her as a true pioneer. Throughout her career, Ekwall became known for genre scenes and portraits that portrayed women and children with insight, grace, and dignity. In The Wool Winder, she combines technical finesse with a subtle psychological touch that sets her apart from many of her contemporaries. This painting is a fine example of Ekwall’s sensitivity to mood and her ability to infuse everyday scenes with poetic meaning. It speaks not only to the domestic world of 19th-century life, but to the emotional depth and quiet agency of women—subjects she returned to again and again with skill and empathy. Today, her work is represented in several museum collections, including Sweden’s Nationalmuseum. oil on canvas unframed 57 × 47 cm (22.4 × 18.5 inches) framed 72.5 × 63 cm (28.5 × 24.8 inches) signed and dated: Emma Ekwall 1877 Condition Report The painting is in very good condition. The area was renowned for its sand dunes. A ferry operated there, transporting people and livestock across the river. In 1886, the village consisted of only 11 households and was so small it didn't even have a bakery. In 1890, Paul Gauguin and six other artists, including Paul Sérusier, Jacob Meyer...

Antique Swedish Oil Canvas Painting Romantic Interior Family Scene Monkey 1883

A fine & large antique oil on canvas painting by Bengt Nordenberg (1822-1902), Sweden, dated 1883. Nordenberg is recognized as one of Sweden's most celebrated 19th century artists, his work epitomizes Swedish Romanticism and this painting is a wonderful representation of that style. The painting depicts an interior scene of a mother holding an infant in front of an open heath, with a fire burning in the grate, above the fire there are racks of meat hanging and above that are hams hanging. The infant has evidently just woken from a nap and his cradle sits next to his mother's chair, his brother sitting on the floor with his monkey & the carrying case he transports the animal to beg for money, the monkey humorously sits with his begging plate outstretched to the boy's mother, much to her consternation! The painting is signed and dated lower left, it is in very good condition and is housed in the original gilded composition and limewood frame, Nordenberg's record for a painting at auction is over $91,500, this is a fine example of the artist's work and is ready to hang on your wall.
