The Seven Wonders of the Classical World English School, early 20th century set of seven (7) 7 x oil paintings on paper mounted on board, framed Glass covering framed: 22 x 14 inches board: 21 x 13 inches condition: very good provenance: private collection, England 1. Great Pyramid of Giza (Egypt) Status: Still standing Built: ~2560 BCE Purpose: Tomb for Pharaoh Khufu Significance: The only surviving wonder, this monumental feat of engineering stood as the tallest man-made structure for over 3,800 years. Its precision and grandeur still awe modern architects and historians. 2. Hanging Gardens of Babylon Built: ~6th century BCE Purpose: Allegedly built by Nebuchadnezzar II for his wife Significance: Said to have been a marvel of terraced greenery, these gardens showcased advanced irrigation and architectural beauty—representing human ingenuity and love. 3. Statue of Zeus at Olympia (Greece) Status: Destroyed (5th century CE) Built: ~435 BCE Purpose: Honor the god Zeus in his temple at Olympia Significance: Made of ivory and gold, it exemplified the height of Greek sculpture and religious artistry. It inspired reverence and awe among ancient pilgrims. 4. Temple of Artemis at Ephesus (Turkey) Status: Ruins remain Built: Original ~550 BCE; rebuilt ~323 BCE Purpose: Sacred to Artemis, goddess of the hunt Significance: Renowned for its size and beauty, this temple was one of the most impressive religious structures ever built, attracting pilgrims from across the ancient world. 5. Mausoleum at Halicarnassus (Turkey) Status: Ruins remain Built: ~350 BCE Purpose: Tomb for Mausolus, a Persian satrap Significance: So iconic that the word “mausoleum” comes from it. Colossus of Rhodes (Greece) Status: Destroyed by earthquake in 226 BCE Built: ~292–280 BCE Purpose: Celebrate Rhodes’ victory over Cyprus Significance: A massive bronze statue of the sun god Helios, this wonder symbolized freedom and unity. It stood at the harbor as a beacon of resilience. 7. Lighthouse of Alexandria (Pharos of Alexandria) (Egypt) Status: Destroyed by earthquakes (14th century CE) Built: ~280 BCE Purpose: Guide ships into the busy harbor of Alexandria Significance: One of the tallest man-made structures of the ancient world, this lighthouse set the standard for all that followed and demonstrated the Ptolemaic dynasty’s commitment to science and navigation.
