About the Item
Fahamu Pecou is a visual artist and scholar whose works combine observations on hip-hop, fine art and popular culture. Pecou’s paintings, performance art, and academic work addresses concerns around contemporary representations of black masculinity and how these images impact both the reading and performance of black masculinity. He began his career experimenting with the branding strategies employed in hip-hop music and entertainment. These experiments ultimately led Pecou to question not only the stereotypes engendered by the commodification of hip-hop culture, but more, to consider how the influence of historic and social configurations of race, class and gender impact and inform these representations.

Farrokh Mahdavi (b. 1970, Tehran, Iran) is amongst the cutting edge painters of his generation in Iran, with his work being shown in over thirty exhibitions in Iran and abroad. Farrokh's works are easily distinguished with their unique pink hue and recognizable technique. As he once said about his portraits, Farrokh aims to reach “a more material meaning” by “omitting the impurities”, defamiliarization of known facial elements, and crossing over “cliché definitions”. Farrokh Mahdavi's work has been presented at the Iranian...

This work invites deep reflection on our digital age, depicting Astro Boy as a white specter, suggesting the loss of an authentic childhood now supplanted by the flickering lights of screens. This message of resistance against the omnipresence of digital technology is reinforced through Astro Boy's stance, akin to Michelangelo's David, an iconic symbol of resistance and humanity.
