About the Item

“Mom and Her Kids,” an exquisite oil painting on canvas by Gaetano Chierici, also known as La Maschera, captures a timeless domestic scene with remarkable attention to detail and emotional resonance. Measuring 28.25 inches in width and 20.12 inches in height, the picture emanates an aura of warmth and nostalgia, drawing viewers into a moment frozen in time. The artist, Gaetano Chierici, born in Italy in 1838, skillfully combines his mastery of genre painting with a devotion to capturing the intimate moments of life. Having initially studied in Florence, Chierici’s journey led him to become a decorative painter, and he painted enchanting scenes of children and animals adorning the facades and interiors of homes. His work is a testament to his ability to infuse charm and emotion into each brushstroke. In this masterpiece, Chierici unveils a glimpse of domestic life from a bygone era. The focal point is a mother standing in a cozy, sunlit kitchen, her presence commanding the space with grace and authority. Clad in an attire that resonates with the period, her gentle yet firm demeanor exemplifies the strength of maternal love. Two children encircle her, their faces aglow with youthful exuberance. One can sense the connection and the unspoken bonds between mother and children, the shared joys and responsibilities of their everyday lives. Chierici’s meticulous attention to detail is evident in every aspect of the composition. The kitchen’s interior is meticulously rendered, capturing the essence of a time where simplicity reigned supreme. The textures of the wood, fabrics, and utensils are so vividly portrayed that they seem tangible. The play of light, filtering through a half-opened window, bathes the scene in a soft, golden glow, reminiscent of a scene from an old cinematic masterpiece. The emotion portrayed through the body language, facial expressions, and gazes of the subjects is a testament to Chierici’s ability to breathe life into his creations. The mother’s gentle touch and watchful eye convey her protective nature, while the children’s wide-eyed curiosity and playful postures resonate with innocence and youthful energy. “Mom and Her Kids” is a masterpiece that transports viewers to a bygone era, evoking emotions that span generations. Gaetano Chierici’s keen eye for detail and his ability to capture the essence of human connection and everyday life make this painting a testament to his skill and artistry. The frame, measuring 37 inches in width and 29 inches in height, serves as an elegant border to this timeless tableau, encapsulating the magic of La Maschera’s work and inviting observers to step into the world he created. This painting stands as a testament to the enduring power of art to capture the beauty of moments that might otherwise be lost to time. 27634-LU2595213125602

Large Antique Oil Painting by Chierici Entitled ‘The Mask’, 1869
Located in London, GB
Large antique oil painting by Chierici entitled ‘The Mask’, 1869 Italian, 1869 Canvas: Height 72cm, width 96cm Frame: Height 95cm, width 118cm, depth 8cm This large-scale oil painting is by the Italian artist Gaetano Chierici (1838-1920). Considered one of the greatest Italian genre painters of his time, Chierici is known for his charming familial scenes, rendered with an almost photographic level of realism. This painting is a version of one of his most favoured scenes, entitled La Maschera (‘The Mask’). A similar larger version by the artist dated to 1874 was sold at Christie’s, ‘19th Century European Art Sale’, 2013, lot 19 (£133,875). The painting depicts a humorous squabble between siblings, mediated by their mother. The young girl clings to her mother's leg in fear, whilst her brother taunts her with a frightening theatrical mask. The mother’s mouth hangs open, likely about to scold her son for his teasing. An assortment of objects are littered over the room, including shelled pea pods, cutlery, and paper scrapes, adding to the sense of chaos. Chierici effectively captures the tumultuous atmosphere, and the emphasis on the dynamics between the family members is typical of his work. Also to be noted are the exceptional technical qualities of the work. The pictorial realism of the figures and the surrounding kitchen is achieved through the multiple layers of thin paints and glazes, resulting in a lifelike sheen. Chierici’s use of colour is also superb, contrasting the browns and neutrals of the kitchen with pops of colour from the mother’s red headscarf and the teal cabinet...
