About the Item

Ginés Parra (Spanish, 1896–1960) Damas Oil on canvas Signed ‘PARRA’ (lower left); further signed and inscribed Composition Parra Registra 19 25.5 x 21.125 in. (64.8 x 53.9 cm) A striking example of Ginés Parra’s mature style, Damas presents a rhythmic, almost monumental arrangement of female figures rendered in a bold, limited palette of black, blue, ochre, and brown. The composition is marked by repetition and visual weight, with each form echoing the next to create a sense of sculptural solidity and meditative stillness. The rough, expressive brushwork and simplified shapes lend the work a primal intensity, underscoring Parra’s deep engagement with both Spanish artistic heritage and modernist form. Parra, a prominent figure in the École de Paris and a contemporary of Picasso, developed a distinct visual voice rooted in emotional depth and formal economy. His work bridges post-Cubist structure and expressionist colour, often exploring archetypal figures and timeless scenes. Damas is a compelling example of his ability to distill gesture, mood, and repetition into a powerful and cohesive whole. Provenance: From a private collection of French Naturalist painters
