Herbert Denmen was born in Brooklyn, New York on June 20, 1855 into a wealthy family. Denman studied at the Art Students League in New York City, and in Paris with Carolus Duran. After returning to the United States in 1887, he decorated the Vanderbilts' home at Dobbs Ferry, the Manhattan Hotel, and the Waldorf-Astoria ballroom.
He died in Idylwild, California on October 3, 1903.
Exhibition:
Paris Salon, 1886; Paris Expo, 1889; San Francisco Art Association, 1897-1905.
His work is in the Brooklyn Museum.
Denmen was commissioned to decorate Fred Vanderbilt's house at Dobbs Ferry, the Manhattan Hotel, and the Waldorf-Astoria ballroom.
He was a member of the Society of American Artists and the American Fine Arts Society, both of New York City. Denman's exhibitions include the National Academy of Design in NYC, from 1881 to 1897; the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893
