Description
In this luminous costumbrista scene, Ignacio Gil Sala transports us to a traditional street in Ibiza, bathed in Mediterranean light. Whitewashed façades, hanging flowerpots, and the typical local architecture are combined with the vitality of the figures: a woman with a shawl and fan accompanied by two young girls, all portrayed with loose yet precise brushwork that captures the cheerful and spontaneous essence of the moment.
The composition is built with the chromatic mastery characteristic of the artist, featuring vibrant whites that reflect the intensity of the sun and contrast with the greens and pinks of the dresses. In the background, a church or iconic island building can be seen, completing a scene full of depth, rhythm, and life.
About the artist: Ignacio Gil Sala (1913–2003)
Ignacio Gil Sala was a prolific Catalan painter, born in Barcelona in 1913. He entered the School of Fine Arts at a very young age, where he demonstrated exceptional talent, earning the Silver Medal and a scholarship to copy works at the Prado Museum. His career spanned more than seven decades, during which he specialized in Mediterranean landscapes and costumbrismo (scenes of local customs), gaining particular recognition for his views of Ibiza, Mallorca, Valencia, and Andalusia.
His style is situated within Spanish Post-Impressionism, with clear luminist influences and a remarkable ability to capture the atmosphere and emotion of each location. He received numerous awards at both national and international exhibitions, including several prizes at the National Exhibition of Barcelona and the Painters of Africa Exhibition.
Castelldefels, where he lived, named a street after him, and the Consell Insular de les Illes Balears honored him for his artistic contribution to the image of Ibiza.
