About the Item

"Grande vague à Rothéneuf" - Brittany, France Oil on canvas signed lower right, 50 x 65 x 2,5 cm, titled and dated on the back, 1986 Framed with a natural oak floating frame (55 x 70 x 3,5 cm frame included) Jean Thomas’s painting captures the powerful beauty of a large wave crashing on the shores of Rotheneuf in Brittany. Using shades of blue and green with white foam, the artist creates a dynamic contrast between the deep water and bright waves. Visible brushstrokes suggest the movement of the water, while a small boat on the distant horizon emphasizes the vastness of the ocean. The composition focuses on the wave, realistically portrayed with energy and emotion. The perspective invites the viewer to experience its power. The shoreline’s gray tones contrast with the vivid sea, evoking both the raw force and serene beauty of nature. The absence of human figures highlights the sea’s immense scale. JEAN THOMAS (1923-2019) Trained at the Lyon Academy of Fine Arts, Jean Thomas began exhibiting his work in 1946. His early paintings, influenced by Modernist masters like Fernand Léger and Henri Matisse, also show the impact of contemporaries such as Bernard Buffet. In his landscapes paintings, Jean Thomas explores light with great precision, achieving near-photographic realism while maintaining a distinct artistic style. Known for his exceptional technical skills, Jean Thomas’s paintings remain in impeccable condition, demonstrating meticulous preparation and execution. He seamlessly blended painting and craftsmanship, creating works of fine detail. Thomas had a rare ability to capture the essence of places, mainly from France but also from New York and Venice to Tahiti and Corsica. His masterful use of light made his paintings deeply immersive. Jean Thomas, who passed away in 2019 at the age of 96, left a lasting legacy in major institutions like the Centre Pompidou and the Musée d'Art Moderne in Paris. Throughout his career, his introspective approach allowed him to express what moved him, from portraits to Mediterranean landscapes. His work reflects his deep connection to regions like Provence, Italy, Spain, Tunisia, Sicily, and Corsica, which he saw as endless sources of beauty and inspiration.

Abstract composition, oil painting by Pierre Coquet
Located in Montfort l’Amaury, FR
Pierre Coquet - Abstract Composition in white shades Reference number A202 Framed with a natural oak floated frame 40 x 45 cm (45 x 50 cm frame included) This work is painted with oil on a board. It is signed and dated 83 in the bottom right. Pierre was very sensitive to abstract paintings. He did a lot of abstract works melting colors and shapes in different atmosphere and style. Nevertheless he could come back to figuration and again to abstraction with no precise period of time. Provenance : Workshop of the artist Pierre Coquet (1926-2021) is a French painter who was born in Limas near Lyon, France. He entered the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Lyon in 1942 and followed the teaching of Antoine Chartres, Henri Vielly and René Chancrin. He won a prize in 1945 and joined a movement that wanted to be outside of any school whose name ends with “ism”, (like impressionism, cubism…) between figuration and the renaissance of Abstract Art, bringing together young generations under thirty and eager not to submit to any technique. The “Sanzism” (literally without « ism ») will bring together, among others, painters: James Bansac, Roger Bravard, André Chaix, Jean Mélinand, Paul Clair, André Cottavoz, Pierre Doye, Jean Fusaro, Jacques Truphémus, André Lauran, Edouard Mouriquand, Pierre Palué, Paul Philibert-Charrin, Antoine Sanner and Françoise Juvin. The latter will become his wife in 1948. In 1949, he participated in an exhibition in Geneva, at the Musée de l'Athénée, entitled "Eleven French painters" with Jacques Truphémus and Jean Fusaro. Françoise and Pierre moved to Paris in 1950. There he met Alexandre Garbell, who encouraged him and whom he attended classes in his academy on Boulevard de Clichy. Working as an art teacher at the Corvisart school in Paris he painted a lot beside this activity. His main subjects are “assemblages of objects” which evoke the memory of Giorgio Morandi, the roofs of Paris, still lifes, characters in situation, and abstraction. This sincere and modest man, turned inward in a climate of deep meditation, likes to express his feeling that “all painters encounter the same difficulties in wanting to express unspeakable emotions with painting. Everything is possible, at the condition it is true ” use to say Pierre. I have known Pierre for a long time and organized several exhibition with their paintings. I am now taking care of the whole workshop providing beautifiul figurative and abstract works, paintings and many drawings with various sizes. Pierre was always working in his workshop, everyday, he needed it, painting was something vital to him. Paintings by Pierre...

"Breezy Shore" large scale oil painting of ocean waves and blue sky
By Annie Wildey
Located in Edgartown, MA
The rhythm of the waves marks time, like the breath. Moment to moment, its intensity fluctuates like emotion. Thoughts linger and pass, like a veil of fog. At the shore I am reminded to be present. It provides a place for contemplation and reflection. I identify with the strength and vulnerability of the ocean when a storm is brewing or passing, when the surf is up, when the fog looms or is lifting, when the horizon is obscured, or the sky begins to clear, I find beauty in these moments of transition. I bring this experience into the studio as I interpret the smells, sounds, feelings, and energy of the water or the quiet movement of fog. The process is fluid, moving between freedom and control, accident and intention, as I push and pull the paint to convey and realize my visual and emotional experiences. BIOGRAPHY Annie is a British painter and printmaker. She moved to New York City in 1989 and worked at the British Consulate. Art remained a part of her life during those years, but in 2006 she left and begin a new chapter, returning to a life with art at the very center and enrolled in an MFA program at the The New York Academy of Art. This provided the instruction, immersion and creative freedom to develop her skills and artistic voice and proved to be a fruitful time bringing with it several awards including a Post-graduate Fellowship, Prince of Wales Scholarships, and travel awards to Normandy, France and St Barts, in the French West Indies. After the fellowship Annie left New York for the East End of Long Island and spent two wonderful years in the quiet hamlet of Orient, as Artist-in-Residence at the William Steeple Davis House. It was here that Annie met and became a studio assistant to Master Printmaker Dan Welden...
