Battle scene Oil painting on canvas Attributed to Karel Breydel

About the Item

Attr. to Karel Breydel, known as the Knight of Antwerp (1678 - 1733) Battle with knights and landscape in the background Oil on canvas, cm 44.5 X 36.7 Frame 52.5 x 45 cm The painting under consideration, considering the style, composition and subjects depicted, can be attributed to the Antwerp master Karl Breydel (1678-1733). Most of the information about Breydel's life is based on his first biography written by Jean-Baptiste Descamps (La Vie des Peintres Flamands, Allemands et Hollandois, vol. 1, 1764, pp. 190-195). A pupil first of Pieter Ykens (1648-1695) and then of Pieter Rysbrack (1655-1729) from 1695, he traveled extensively in both Italy and Germany, staying in Frankfurt and Nuremberg, where, on learning of his brother Frans's success, he soon joined him to serve the court of Hasse-Kassel. Here the two brothers worked together for two years with considerable success. In 1703 he moved to Amsterdam, joining the city Guild (the city's guild of arts and crafts) and beginning his career as a battler. He, in fact, following in the footsteps of his master Rysbrack and having had the opportunity to paint in contact with the Brueghels, had hitherto established himself as a landscape painter, but his favorite theme remained that of "Battle," so that to this day he is known primarily as a painter of battle pieces and cavalry attacks. These paintings are ingeniously composed and painted with great spirit in the manner of Adam Frans van der Meulen (1632-1690), Antwerp's leading battle painter of the 17th century. He also executed a series of landscapes, village scenes and views of the Rhine in the manner of Jan Griffier (1652-1718). In 1723 he moved to Antwerp, then to Brussels with Jacob van Hellemont. In 1726 he was in Ghent and finally returned again to Antwerp. Many paintings by this prolific master are in European museums, including four Choc de cavalerie and a battle on copper in the Royal Museums in Brussels, while other works are held in London, Antwerp at the National Museum and other institutions. His battles, usually in a reduced display meter, are rich in characters, with spacious landscape settings, as in the case of the present painting, in which Breydel has combined one of his "classic" battle views with a Rhine landscape, a genre that continued to enjoy great popularity throughout the 18th century.

Title: Shepherd in the Pyrenees Artist: Enric Porta i Mestre (1898–1993) Technique: Oil on canvas Style: Post-Impressionism with Expressionist influences Dimensions: Unframed: 23.6 x 31.9 in Framed: 29.9 x 38.2 in Signature: Signed in the lower right corner as "E. DESCRIPTION OF THE WORK Shepherd in the Pyrenees by Enric Porta i Mestre depicts a rural scene with a striking sense of introspection and evocative charm. The painting portrays a shepherd tending to his flock amidst the mountainous landscape typical of the Catalan Pyrenees. The composition captures the serenity and beauty of nature through vibrant colors and dynamic brushstrokes. The work reflects a Post-Impressionist style with loose, bold strokes and vivid tones, combined with Expressionist influences in its ability to evoke emotions beyond the physical depiction. The energetic and textured brushwork infuses the painting with a lively rhythm, while the rich palette of greens and blues immerses the viewer in the landscape's tranquil atmosphere. In this piece, Porta i Mestre showcases a mastery of color and light, illustrating his deep connection to his homeland and its rural life, which served as a source of inspiration throughout his career. ARTIST BIOGRAPHY Enric Porta i Mestre (La Pobla de Segur, 1898–1993) was a Catalan painter known for his landscapes, still lifes, and costumbrist depictions. Trained in Lleida and Barcelona, Porta debuted in 1922 with an exhibition in the Catalan capital.
