About the Item

Luis Ricardo Falero 1851-1896 Spanish The Tempest Signed and dated "Falero / 1889" (lower right) Oil on canvas Luis Ricardo Falero, the renowned Spanish painter celebrated for his depictions of the female nude in mythological and celestial settings, brings Shakespeare’s The Tempest to life in this striking oil on canvas. A master of academic realism and luminous color, Falero captures the moment Prospero frees the spirit Ariel from imprisonment within a split tree. Wearing a vivid red robe, Prospero dominates the composition, his commanding presence emphasized by his flowing garments and the scene’s dynamic movement. Ariel, depicted as an ethereal figure, exudes an otherworldly glow, their delicate form bathed in a golden light. Falero’s keen attention to detail is evident in the intricate rendering of textures—from the coarse bark of the fractured tree to the soft translucence of Ariel’s garment. The lush, verdant background of deep yellows and greens contrasts beautifully with the darker, weathered wood of the tree trunk. The painting’s dramatic lighting and rich palette underscore Falero’s technical brilliance, perfectly embodying the Academic tradition that emphasized idealized beauty and narrative depth. Born in Granada, Spain, Falero initially pursued a naval career but abandoned it against his parents' wishes. He traveled on foot to Paris, studying art, chemistry and engineering, leaving the latter to train under the great Gabriel Ferrier. Falero later moved to London, where he ultimately settled. Today, his works are held in prestigious private collections across Europe and the United States, as well as premier museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. No Love Without Envy by Eugene Von Blaas
By Eugene von Blaas
Located in New Orleans, LA
Eugen von Blaas Italian I 1843-1932 No Love Without Envy Signed and dated "Eugen von Blaas 1901" (lower right) Oil on canvas Eugen von Blaas masterfully captured the spirit and charm of Venice, and No Love Without Envy stands as one of his most exceptional compositions. Larger and more finely detailed than many of his works, this grand painting reflects his unparalleled mastery of light, color and narrative. Rich in detail and emotion, this scene is believed to feature a stylized self-portrait of the artist alongside his wife, Paola Prina. Set in a sun-drenched Venetian courtyard, the composition brims with life and intrigue. At its center, an orange seller—modeled by Prina—engages in a flirtatious exchange with an admirer, the artist himself, while three onlookers observe with amusement and envy. The interplay of light and texture is remarkable: von Blaas' exquisite brushwork renders the delicate lace, sumptuous fabrics and intricately adorned garments with near-photographic precision, while the soft flesh tones contrast beautifully against the timeworn stonework of Venice. This attention to detail, combined with the work’s luminous palette, creates a sense of immediacy and warmth that defines the best of von Blaas' Venetian genre paintings. Born in 1843 to Austrian parents in Italy, von Blaas was raised in a household steeped in artistic tradition. His father, Karl Blaas, was a renowned portraitist and history painter, while his brother specialized in military scenes. When Karl was appointed professor at the Venice Academy of Fine Arts, the family relocated to the floating city—a move that profoundly shaped von Blaas’ artistic vision. Though he studied in Rome, Vienna and Paris, it was Venice that remained his greatest muse. Captivated by its light, architecture and everyday moments of romance and social interplay, he became the foremost painter of Venetian genre scenes. During Venice’s Austrian rule, von Blaas adopted the Italianized name “Eugene de Blaas...

Dance of the Nymphs
By Paul Desire Trouillebert
Located in New Orleans, LA
This lyrical landscape entitled Dance of the Nymphs was composed by the French Barbizon painter Paul Désiré Trouillebert. A joyful scene of nymphs dancing the morning fog, the work closely resembles an important work by the great Camille Corot, which is now housed at the Musée d'Orsay (Paris). Renowned for his unique individuality that toed the line between the traditional and modern, Corot and his landscapes helped pave the way for an entire generation of Impressionists who followed him. Trouillebert perfectly captures the poetic atmosphere of Corot’s groundbreaking works, while also imbuing this scene with a freshness and character that is all his own. Trouillebert's oil on canvas is exemplary of the tradition of historical painting. The work perfectly combines a realistic depiction of the natural world with a spirited romanticism as his idealized nymph figures frolic playfully beneath a crisp morning sky. As a whole, it is a lovely composition executed with a level of skill and artistry that proves Trouillebert's exceptional talent in the arts. Born in Paris in 1831, Paul Désiré Trouillebert was a student of the academic painters Ernest Hébert...
