Wonderful mid century Bay Area figurative painting of a reclining nude by Berkeley artist Marjorie Cathcart (American, 1918 - 2014), circa 1964. The woman reclines on a bright red drape, stretching diagonally across the horizontal canvas, in front of a bold yellow background. This lively color palette is accented with teals and blues.
Signed "Cathcart" lower right.
Presented in a giltwood frame.

Marjorie Cathcart held a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of California, Berkeley 1943, Studied with Lundy Seigrist, Catherine Hagen, Tom Holland and Anne O’Hanlon. Marin Society of Artists, San Francisco Women Artists. President Oakland Art Association. Exhibited; California State Art Exposition, Jack London Fair, 1st place at California State Fair 1967. Listed in: Edan Hughes, "Artists in California, 1786-1940", Women Artists of the American West; Yesterday's Artists of the Monterey Peninsula; Monterey: The Artist's View,1925-1945; Artists of the American West. Marjorie Cathcart
Marjorie Cathcart held a bachelor of fine arts degree at the University of California, Berkeley, 1943. She studied with Lundy Siegriest, Catherine Hagen, Tom Holland and Anne O’Hanlon and was influenced by Wayne Thiebaud. Cathcart taught at the California College of Arts and Crafts. She exhibited at the California State Art Exposition; the Jack London Fair; 1st place at California State Fair 1967; and Annual International Art Festival, San Francisco. Cathcart was listed in Edan Hughes, Artists in California, 1786–1940; Women Artists of the American West; Yesterday's Artists of the Monterey Peninsula; Monterey: The Artist's View, 1925–1945; and Artists of the American West.
