Oil Figurative Paintings

“Good artists borrow. Great artists steal.” A quote oft attributed to various sources that was never actually uttered by any of them. Though Mark Twain elaborated on the sentiment: “Ninety-nine parts of all things that proceed from the intellect are plagiarisms.” In the Framed Series, I use my 1% contribution to combine issues of consumption with my autobiography. I paint copies of copies of paintings within paintings to reference the appropriation, commodification, and altered continuum of art. My paintings of paintings are based on photographs of originals to perpetuate the continual distillation of form, given the ease with which images are presently exchanged and modified. Further, by reducing historically significant paintings to framed objects hanging on walls, I augment art as a commodity and reconcile the conflict between the artificially assigned monetary value of artworks with the reality that they are simply swirls of paint. In this way, I am also acknowledging the literality of my own work. I have also altered each copied painting to personalize the context of the pieces and address specific autobiographical ideas. These ideas relate to a range of both recent and distant experiences, both funny and sad. Although my initial renderings are digital image composites, my medium of choice is oil paint, applied in transparent layers, using the image on the computer screen as a reference. Signed lower left "Kvapil" Charles Kvapil was born in Czechoslovakia on November 1, 1884, and died in Paris in 1957. He takes courses at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. His first works are exhibited in 1908, at the Salon of Antwerp. In 1911, he exhibits in Munich; his works show a definite cubist influence in a well-tempered, organization and simplification bill. Arrived at a young age in Paris, he sets up his studio in Montmartre in the Hamlet of Artists, between Lepic Street and No. 11 Junot Avenue near those of Utrillo and Valadon; it is there that he will die. He is now represented in numerous public and private collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in Paris, the museums of Le Havre, Libourne, Rouen, Saint-Etienne, Amsterdam and Tunis. Charles Kvapil is known mainly as a painter of characters, especially for his representations of naked women for which his friend Ginette often served as a model; he painted models in the studio, sometimes in front of his window with the Montmartre hill in the background; often bathers or female nudes placed in groups of characters, in the manner of Courbet and the Impressionists at their beginning. He is also creator of many portraits; but he did not disdain either the still lifes, especially the bouquets of flowers, or the landscapes, which form an important part of his work. He painted many regions, including Corrèze, where he "knew how to grasp the character of the country that is not his, with his usual mastery" (SSHA Bulletin Corrèze), the Mediterranean coast, Corsica, where he stays regularly in the 1920s and 1930s; in Paris he participated in exhibitions of painters of Corsica in 1925 and 1933. In 1939, at a new exhibition of Art Corse, at the Gallery The Team, still in Paris, he presented two paintings titled "Costa Brugiata, Cap Corsica "and" View of Rogliano ". His palette is rich in cobalt blue and warm colors. His technique is voluntary and powerful. His works in oil are often of modest size, sometimes painted on panels, or on cardboard. He also practiced with great skill the technique of pastel. P. Béran, in a study he has dedicated to him, praises the richness of his material and all that his art owes to the joy of living. This idyllic late 19th-century oil painting by English artist Edward William Cooke RA (1811-1880) depicts a west-country cove with two cottages, donkeys, figures, and fishing boats. From our elevated vantage point, the view extends between two quaint cottages and across the beach before sweeping around the sandy coastline. Crystalline waters lap the shore, where moored craft rest. It’s an accomplished rendering of a challenging composition. It’s enhanced by trees, which essentially ‘frame’ the right side, while a wooded track provides interest on the left. Cooke was a keen admirer of the Dutch old masters, and the spirit of the Golden Age underpins this splendid work. In diaries, he recorded how he travelled by donkey to access elevated spots in the southwest, so it’s conceivable that he did so here. In his catalogue raisonné, it lists a work from the same year titled ‘Bay with Donkeys’. Born in Pentonville, London, Cooke was raised in the company of accomplished artists as both his father, George Cooke (1781-1834), and his uncle, William Bernard Cooke (1778-1855), were engravers. As such, they were associated with a circle of Victorian painters who aided Cooke’s early development. These included the highly regarded marine painter Clarkson Frederick Stanfield RA RBA (1793-1867), who provided frequent advice and inspiration. Indeed, as a teenager, Cooke produced numerous drawings after Stanfield’s works. A precocious talent, by the age of nine, he was already displaying an advanced understanding of engraving, particularly for ships, coupled with a natural, seemingly in-built skill as a draughtsman. Many of his early drawings depict pastoral landscapes after the masters, such as Nicolaes Berchem (1620-1683), Paulus Potter (1625-1654), and Karel Dujardin (1626-1678). In an extraordinary turn of events, in 1820, his advanced abilities led to his first commission when he provided botanical illustrations for John Loudon's 'Encyclopaedia of Plants’. These were followed by drawings published in the 'Botanical Cabinet...
