"Plage de Trouville" 1953, 20th Century oil on canvas by Emilio Grau Sala
Located in Madrid, ES
EMILIO GRAU SALA Spanish, 1911 - 1975 PLAGE DE TROUVILLE signed Grau Sala (lower left) signed again, located & dated "Grau Sala, Trouville, 1953" on the reverse oil on canvas 15 X 24 inches (38 X 61 cm.) framed: 24-1/2 X 33-3/4 inches (62.5 X 85.5 cm.) PROVENANCE Private French Collection Emilio Grau Sala came from a family of artists. He was born in Barcelona in 1911 and his father, a good cartoonist, had been one of the promoters of the "Salon des Humanistes" and made his exhibitions normally in the Parés Hall. His first works were exhibited at the Salon des Independents, in the years 1930-33. Grau Sala was essentially a Mediterranean painter, son of post-impressionism and enriched with French painting of the last fifty years. Grau Sala lived and absorbed all the avant-garde movements that broke through in Paris, but never adhered to any. Creating your personal style. His pictorial lyricism and naturalism superimposed the evotative and sensitive quality of the image to any other concern. In 1953 Grau Sala spends his first summer in Honfleur becoming one of the most active Honflerian painters. Honfleur forms a coast triangle next to Deauville and Trouville, and in that August of 53, Grau Sala pinto is an elegant beach, which at that time met French and European high society. His works can be found in the Museums of the Villa de Paris, L'Ile de France Museum, at the Château de Sceaux, Honfleur Museum, La Rochelle Museum, Barcelona Museum, Tossa de Mar...

Philip Evergood, Little Rock, Oil on Canvas, 1955 - "Civil Rights."
Located in Miami, FL
"Civil Rights." Evergood's early commentary on racial issues in the 1950s depicts four black men gagged, roped and hanging from a tree. In the background, imprisoned blacks look on through a barbed-wire fence. Whites watch in horror but do nothing to help. Meanwhile, a two-legged and three-headed serpent wraps himself around the tree that physically and symbolically separates the races. This is an important work in the history of American art. It may be one of the very earliest examples of a major American painter doing a major work that challenges racial segregation and injustice at a time when no one else would. The title of the work is inspired by a Historic Supreme Court decision on racial segregation. The Little Rock...

"Man with White Chapeau"
Located in Southampton, NY
Description: Very expressive oil on heavy paper of a man with a large mustache and wearing a white chapeau by Gen Paul. Signed middle right. New silver leaf frame with dark mat and Museum glass. Overall size framed is 25 by 20 inches. Provenance: Private collector, Argentina. Eugene Paul, known as Gen Paul, was born in 1895 and raised in the bohemian atmosphere of Montmartre. In his life he came to know a great many of the artists, from the anonymous to the world famous, who established themselves in the neighborhood. A self-taught artist, Gen Paul began expressing himself in drawings and paintings as a child, his earliest works show a remarkable talent. He was apprenticed to a wallpaper hanger. until his life was interrupted by war. He was wounded twice in World War One, the second time he lost one of his legs. During his recovery he turned to painting, which became his passion and his livelihood for almost 60 years. Gen Paul exhibited at the Salon d’Automne and the Salon des Indépendants beginning in 1920. In 1928 Gen Paul exhibited fifty paintings at Galerie Bing with Picasso, Rouault, and Soutine. He participated in collective exhibitions in London and Anvers. In 1937 he painted a large fresco for the Pavillon de Vins de France at l’Exposition Internationale de Paris. A restrospective was held at Galerie Drouant-David in 1952 and his works were shown several times at Galerie Ferrero in Geneva, Switzerland. From the late teens until about 1930 Gen Paul produced a large number of exceptionally strong, vibrant expressionist paintings. His work from this period is particularly interesting when compared to that of Chaim Soutine. While their techniques are clearly similar, Soutine’s paintings...

Lady in a Garden
Located in Houston, TX
Francois Gall ( 1912-1987) François Gall was a Hungarian-born French painter best known for his Impressionistic style. Primarily focused on the figure, his brushy oil paintings are largely inspired by the Impressionist masters, Edgar Degas in particular. Gall often painted women engrossed in traditionally feminine activities—ballet, fixing their hair, sewing—rendered in loose, expressive marks and bright pastel colors. In addition to his figurative work, the artist also captured the French landscape, most notably the beach. In A Day at the Beach (c. 1948), loosely sketches bathers frolic under striped umbrellas in a picturesque rendering of French summer vacation. Born in 1912 in Transylvania, Romania, Gall received his formal training at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Workshop Coromaldi in Rome, Italy. He would later settle in Paris in 1936, where he befriended prominent artists of the day—including Pablo Picasso—and became a naturalized French citizen in 1942. As his work grew in esteem, Gall was granted the Francis Smith...

Champagne for the Honeymoon
Located in Miami, FL
Pruett Carter captures the quintessential look of the 1950's in this loosely rendered but charming work for Redbook. Bright, punchy colors define each object and are arranged in a simplified but complex composition of intersecting and overlapping planes of color. The double portrait of the girl expresses a peak moment of introspection. She ponders her situation while preparing to get dressed for her special occasion. The whole scene is imbued with suspense about her future. Carter is a great academic painter. With just a few light touches of the brush, he quickly defines the form of the subject and achieves the X factor of the work. The profile and frontal view of the girl clearly are the same person. He nails her look. This is hard to do. Do not underestimate it. Sadly, there is a reason why there are very few contemporary artists can actually paint and draw without tracing photographs or resort to naive painting. It's hard to do. It's hard to be a painter. You can not fake...

Jirayr Hamparzoom Zorthian was born April 14, 1911 in Kutahya, Turkey, of Armenian parents. At the age of three, he showed considerable talent in drawing and painting. Zorthian went through two Turkish massacres before age eight. He left Turkey at age nine with his family and spent a year in Padua, Italy, waiting for his visa to open to the United States. This period was very important in his life because his father took him to many cities in Europe and exposed him to great works of art. Zorthian arrived in the United States at the age of eleven and settled with his family in New Haven, Connecticut. He obtained his formal education there, after graduating from Yale, the Winchester Fellowship granted him a year and a half at the American Academy in Rome with travel and study throughout Europe. His art career branched into various directions on his return to the United States. As a mural painter his reputation was established. He has forty two (42) murals throughout the United States. Eavesdropping on Grownups, Saturday Evening Post Cover
Located in Fort Washington, PA
Signature: Signed Lower Left Original cover illustration for The Saturday Evening Post, December 2, 1950 The Post described, “One night Art Editor Stuart was having a party. His three boys came downstairs four times and were conducted back up by their mother. The next time they came down, Papa Stuart waxed excited, firmly conveyed them aloft himself, and they did not show up again. Stuart was warmly congratulated on his success as a father. When the party broke up, the youngest lad was found asleep on the stairs. Stuart claims that the older ones never did come down again, but this was probably because they merely went to sleep in their beds from natural causes.
