PROVENANCE Private Collector, Seville, Spain José Villegas Cordero (Seville, August 26, 1844-Madrid, November 9, 1921) was a Spanish painter. He directed the Prado Museum between 1901 and 1918. Biography He was the brother of the painter Ricardo Villegas Cordero. He began his apprenticeship very young with José María Romero, with whom he remained for two years until entering the School of Fine Arts in Seville, where he was under the tutelage of Eduardo Cano. In 1860, when he was only 16 years old, he sold his work Little Philosophy for 2,000 reais at the Seville Exhibition. In 1867 he traveled to Madrid, where he entered Federico Madrazo's studio. There he established friendship with painters Eduardo Rosales and Fortuny. He went regularly to the Prado where he copied Velázquez, from whom he acquired spontaneity and the use of color for his technique. Finally, and out of admiration for Fortuny's orientalist painting, he returned to Seville and organized an excursion to Morocco. Gorgeous tonalist oil painting woman walking in field by pond with home in background by Willis Seaver Adams (American, 1844-1921), circa 1880. Frame is vintage gilt molded and wood frame and shows previous repair of molding losses. Image size: 20"H x 24"W. Auctions records for the artist exceed $6,000. Willis Seaver Adams was known for his landscapes of the Connecticut River Valley. A relative recluse for much of his artistic life, his loneliness can be seen in much of his works. Oil miniatures were the focus for almost all of his later works. He is credited with over 425 oils, watercolors, and drawings. Willis Seaver was born in 1844 on a farm in Suffield, near the Connecticut River. He intermittently attended the Suffield Academy, and always wanted to be a painter. A wealthy doctor became his patron, and financed his studies in 1868 at the Royal Academy in Antwerp. When the doctor passed away, Adams returned home and struggled to make a living painting. After working for a photographer for three years, he opened his own studio. Adams helped organize Cleveland's first watercolor exhibit in 1876. Soon thereafter, he completed a portrait of Rutherford B. Hayes, then governor of Ohio, prior to his becoming President of the United States. This portrait enhanced Adams notoriety. In 1878, Adams traveled to Italy where he opened a studio in Venice, and became friendly with neighbor James Whistler. Prior to returning to Springfield, Adams lived in Florence, Italy for three years. He returned to became an instructor for the Springfield Art Association, and began to exhibit his works at the galleries of James D. Gill. His first one-man exhibit was held there in 1894. Other successful exhibitions took place in Chicago, New York, and Boston. Although his works garnered respectable prices and reflected his success, Adams felt he was due more recognition. In 1906, he moved to Greenfield, Massachusetts and converted a barn into a studio. There, he fell into relative obscurity, accompanied mainly by his dog, Collie. In 1921, Adams passed away. Examples of Willis Adams works can be seen at the Kent Memorial Library, the Wadsworth Atheneum, and the Suffield Academy. Several Suffield residents are thought to own Adams paintings.

Literary Origins of Angelica The subject of this painting is Angelica, a princess from the epic chivalric romances of the Italian Renaissance. She first appears in Matteo Maria Boiardo’s Orlando Innamorato (1483) and reappears famously in Ludovico Ariosto’s Orlando Furioso (1532). In these poems – part of the Matter of France cycle of Charlemagne and his paladins – Angelica’s extraordinary beauty ensnares many knights, including Orlando (Roland) and his cousin Rinaldo, sparking rivalries and adventures. He is considered the “most French” of American painters along with Theodore Robinson and Childe Hassam. Wendel was born in Midway, Ohio, and lived in Newport (RI), Boston (1889-1898) and Ipswich (MA, 1898-). As a boy, he joined a circus as an acrobat. He studied with Thomas Noble at the McMicken School of Art at the University of Cincinnati, where he met and became a life long friend of Joseph DeCamp. He and DeCamp traveled to Munich, Germany, in 1878, to study with Frank Duveneck at the Munich Academy and they became known as “The Duveneck Boys.” Duveneck, Chase, Whistler, Twachtman and Wendel painted landscapes and figural paintings in Polling, Florence, and Venice from 1878-1880. Most of his paintings from this period disappeared and are very rare. He sailed for Newport, Rhode Island in 1882 and lived briefly in New York. Girl in restaurant in Paris. 19th century, oil on wood, 46x37,5 cm Eduardo Léon Garrido (1856-1949) Eduardo León Garrido was born in Madrid in 1856. He falls within the Group of Spaniards in Paris, as he warns in his style, with clear influences of Impressionism, somewhat reminiscent of Manet. He was the eldest son of Luis Garrido Fernandez, an official at the Ministry of Finance. His father would have liked him to embrace an administrative career but Eduardo León moved towards the artistic career. Trained in the Escuela Superior de Madrid, he painted his first work « the theft of the Sabine women », at only eighteen years old. Then he entered the Studio of Vicente Palmaroli (1834-1896). He will always consider the latter as his true teacher. In 1875, at the age of 19, he arrived in Paris to continue his studies with a scholarship from the city of Madrid. The same year he exhibited for the first time at the Salon where he presented a « Saint Jerome ». Very quickly he appears to be noticed by the famous merchant of the Rue Chaptal, Adolphe Goupil, for who he worked a few years. Notice that Vincent van Gogh worked for Goupil & Cie from 1869 till 1876 (his brother Theo entered in 1873. From 1876 on Garrido exhibits portraits and stylish, contemporary scenes. Catalogues indicates that he changed his dealer for the gallery Borniche around 1880. During the years 1882-1894 he did not expose anymore at the Salon (except once, in 1887, with the portrait of his friend, the painter Bréauté) . However, he painted a lot to feed the gallery of his dealer and a few galleries in Madrid. During that period he had also some student : Anne Blanche Dillaye (1851-1931), the american painter, studied with him from 1885 till 1887. From 1892 onwards it is the merchant Félix Gérard (one of the first dealers of work by Manet and Courbet), of the Rue Lafitte, which concludes with him an exclusive contract. He probably imposed to the artist to paint a different style. This sealed a radical departure from his 1880-1890 period, during which he painted the streets of Paris, café terraces, newspaper kiosks, and was likened to very fashionable Belle-Époque artists. From 1892 onwards, Garrido painted almost solely gallant scenes in the 18th century style, in keeping with current tastes and clients’ demands. Meanwhile, Garrido left Paris. In 1888 he established a studio on the banks of the Marne at La Varenne-Saint-Hilaire (Val-de-Marne near Paris). He married there in 1892 one of its models, Leonie Beck, and in 1893 their first child, Louis- Edouard, was born. He is quickly integrated into local life and became an art teacher in the Philotechnic Association of La Varenne. From 1895 onwards he presented new works at the Salon des Artistes Français and in 1914, he obtained the French citizenship, while two of his son went into battle (World War I). He continued painting, mainly landscapes, portraits of family members (children, granddaughter Odile born in 1923) and flowers. At the end of his life and because of poor eyesight he painted exclusively flower bouquets. In 1939, Eduardo León and his wife Leonie arrive at Caen. They settled with their son, Louis- Edouard, who resided there. Eduardo Leon Garrido died there in 1949. He is buried in the family burial at the cemetery Venoix in Caen. Some of his paintings can be seen in the Museo del Prado (Madrid), the Museo Carmen Thyssen (Málaga), the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes (Argentina), Bilbao Fine Arts Museum and private collections such as the Bellver Collection in Sevilla. He became known for his idyllic genre scenes of childhood. Morgan was born in London to John Morgan and his wife, Henrietta Hester Clare. His father was a successful genre artist sometimes known as 'Jury Morgan' (after one of his paintings The Gentlemen of the Jury). At the age of 14, he was taken out of school by his father who then tutored him in art. At the age of 16, while still studying with his father, his first picture, The Rehearsal, was exhibited at the Royal Academy, and, after a hiatus of several years, his paintings were shown there regularly. For a while he worked as a portrait artist for an Aylesbury photographer; this training proved to be crucial as it "taught him how to observe closely and to give the greatest attention to detail."
