About the Item
Seventeenth Century Old Master Biblical themed Oil Painting on Panel of Joseph recounting his Dream. A Follower of Rembrandt Harmensz Van Rijn 1606 - 1669. This painting follows a 1638 etching by Rembrandt which artfully employs facial expressions to bring the text to life.
Once Joseph had a dream, which he told to his brothers; and they hated him even more. He said to them "Hear this dream which i have dreamt" (Genesis 37-5-6).
Joseph is the central focus of the scene and is totally engrossed in recounting his dream; his far off gaze suggests that he is visualising anew what he dreamt the night before. The attentive listeners include his father Jacob, the girl with the pearl earring - presumably his sister Dinah, and his mother Rachel, who is situated in the distance in her bedroom.
The expression on Jacob's face indicated interest tempered with a modicum of scepticism. The brothers are closely gathered around Joseph which maybe implicitly verifies the dream in which the sheaves of wheat encircle the central sheave. Joseph is of course completely oblivious to the seeds of dissent he is sowing.
This work is unsigned which of course is common for paintings from the period but it certainly looks close in style to the early work of the Amsterdam artist Jan Victors 1620 - 1676.
Its original author may always remain a mystery but the absolute quality is not in any doubt, it is a real beauty of a painting.
Recent provenance indicated it was purchased from Christies Auction London 30th January 1948 Lot 90 and was in a private collection in Herefordshire. Purchased from Brightwells July 2018 and in a private collection also in Herefordshire.
It is framed in a bespoke frame with gold slip in the 17th Century style.
