About the Item

Medium: Oil on Board Signature: Signed Lower Right Revere F. Wistehuff was one of the central group of cover artists in the New Rochelle Art Colony in the 1920's, '30s, '40s which included the Leyendeckers, Norman Rockwell and Walter Beach Humphrey. "Wistey" did covers for virtually all of the national magazines, including The Saturday Evening Post, This Week, Liberty, Collier's, and many secondary publications, such as the Canadian MacLean's, The Country Guide, The New York Herald Tribune Magazine, Everybody's Weekly, Capper's Farmer, American Girl, and People's Home Journal. Among his many advertising accounts were the John Hancock Mutual Life Insurance Company, Western Union, Beck Beer and Gulf Oil. In most of his work, Wistehuff followed the same style and family-oriented subject matter that marked the approach of his good friend, Norman Rockwell.

Catch and Release
Located in Bozeman, MT
In 1993, a window of opportunity opened as a result of several different situations that were occurring. I was participating in an Artist-in-Residence program in Yellowstone National Park. At the same time, I had recently been asked to show my artwork in nearby Livingston, Montana. All of these events resulted in a major lifestyle change. My love of the outdoors and of fly-fishing drew me to make the transition. So here I am. I live in a small town nestled in the Rocky Mountains where life is the opposite of what it was in Los Angeles. - Joe Fay

Gum Kids
By Leslie Thrasher
Located in New Orleans, LA
Two young children play an ill-advised game of gum stretching on the family couch in this charming composition by famed American illustrator, Leslie Thrasher. Painted towards the start of the Great Depression, Thrasher provided light-hearted images of the lives of everyday people to distract Americans from their troubles. These images appeared on the covers of Liberty Magazine, for whom he produced one cover illustration a week for six consecutive years. Born in 1889 in Piedmont, West Virginia, Thrasher studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts as a teenager and received a scholarship to study art abroad in Paris. Upon his return, he began studying under Howard Pyle, known as the “father of American illustration.” Thrasher sold his first cover illustration to the Saturday Evening Post in 1912, four years before Norman Rockwell’s first Post cover, and he would go on to produce over 360 magazine covers throughout his career. He painted humorous, relatable scenes of life in America with colorful characters set against white backgrounds. He was also a successful commercial artist, painting advertisements for Cream of Wheat, Chesterfield Cigarettes...
