About the Item

Original cover illustration for The Saturday Evening Post, November 13, 1948 The Post described, “Artist Stevan Dohanos felt like a baseball coach who had everything he needed except a pitcher. His supermarket painting was done, except for one major gap. He lacked a model for the hero making a single purchase, who finds himself stymied behind shoppers with three dozen items to be checked. Dohanos sighed and went to Martha’s Vineyard for a summer vacation. On the street there he spotted a vacationist in shorts and a fishing hat. “Hey, wait!” the artist yelled, and explained his problem. The stranger said sure, he’d pose, and went home to get his city clothes on. He’s been in the papers before. The gentleman stalled in the shopping traffic is the famous war correspondent and pride of Yoakum, Texas, H.R. Knickerbocker.” (The Saturday Evening Post, November 13, 1948, p. 3) Date: 1948 Medium: Gouache and Watercolor on Paperboard Dimensions: 21.50" x 19.50" Signature; Signed Lower Left
