About the Item
Mixed media (pencil, pen, brown ink and white chalk) on paper. Italian school of the early 1800s.
Ludovico Maria Sforza weeps at the grave of his young wife Beatrice d'Este (1475 -1497); around him the friars of Santa Maria delle Grazie and to his left Bramante and Leonardo.
On the short side of the tomb's marble canopy is the Sforza coat of arms, with two snakes and two eagles.
The Moor was deeply shaken by the early death in childbirth of his very young wife Beatrice, a companion in his private life but also in his political life, as well as in the same way as her husband, a patron for the art geniuses of their court, such as precisely Leonardo da Vinci and Bramante, authors of many pictorial and architectural works of the Visconti-Sforza court.
Several versions of this episode are known, especially from the 19th century, from the 1815 version by Giovanni Battista Cigola at the Pinacoteca Ambrosiana, to the one by Alessandro Reati of c. 1850.
The painting is presented in a late 19th-century carved wooden frame.
