Grégoire Mathias
16, Clare Street II by Grégoire Mathias – Irish Landmark in Diachronic Cubism

About the Item

16, Clare Street Acrylic on Canvas 34.5 x 26.5 cm This vibrant Diachronic Cubist painting by Greg Mathias captures 16 Clare Street, a historic Dublin shopfront, once a literary landmark. A tribute to Mathias’s 2024 debut Irish exhibition, it merges floral charm, architecture, and memory into one vivid composition. This vibrant acrylic painting by Greg Mathias captures the iconic storefront at 16 Clare Street in Dublin — home to Howbert & Mays, the design and flower shop that hosted the artist’s first Irish exhibition in 2024. Formerly an iconic bookshop beloved by Irish literary figures, the address sits at the heart of Dublin’s cultural and Joycean landmarks. The composition blends architectural forms, floral elements, and pedestrian presence in a joyful palette of greens, ochres, blues, and soft pinks — all interpreted through Mathias’s distinctive Diachronic Cubism, a unique evolution of Cubism that captures both spatial and temporal dimensions. Rather than presenting a single snapshot, the scene unfolds as a layered impression of space and time, with a distinct sense of movement emerging from the scene, inviting the viewer into a lived, dynamic memory. This is more than a street scene; it’s a moment suspended in time — part homage, part lived experience. Perfect For: Buyers looking for Irish themed paintings with cultural significance. Ideal for collectors of Dublin-themed artwork, cubist reinterpretations of real locations, or those furnishing homes with a literary or local connection to Ireland. Keywords: Greg Mathias, Irish cityscape, Dublin painting, Irish art, Clare Street Dublin, cubist architecture, Howbert & Mays, modern Irish painting, literary Dublin, Irish exhibition 2024, figurative cubism, Dublin landmark, Joyce Dublin, 1stDibs Irish art, French artist Ireland. About the artist: Grégoire Mathias, graduate of ENSBA Paris, is a pioneer of Diachronic Cubism, an evolution of Cubism that captures movement and time within a single frame. His works have been exhibited at Sotheby’s Périgueux, and galleries in Paris, New York, and Dublin. Since 2020, Mathias has designed posters for the United Nations (WFUNA), making him the first French artist to do so since Picasso, Chagall, and Miró.
