About the Item
A mysterious blond young woman is standing by the window in a plush drawing room which has a velvety feel. With her back turned to us, she is looking out over the spires and roofs of her city. It must be early morning, as the first light of dawn is beautifully rendered: outdoors the sky is clear blue already, but there are still lights on in the windows of the houses.
What are her thoughts? I would love to know. Perhaps she is just daydreaming, or thinking of a lost love.
But it is 1938, the year Hitler marched into Austria and the year of the Kristallnacht riots. Notice the menorah on the chest of drawers to her right. Is she feeling a sense of foreboding? Whatever her situation, we realise that her life is soon to change and the poignancy of this work of art. The oil on board is monogramed SS or GG as well as dated 1938 at the upper right. While this is only a weak attribution, have seen a rare oil by the woman sculptor, painter Genevieve Granger (1877-1967) in similar style. The painting is presented in a narrow simple placeholder frame which will facilitate the shipping of this large piece.
