Mr. Stanley Turns on the Stream, 1899 Stanley Steamer, Great Moments in Early American Motoring
The illustrations of Kenneth Riley are remarkable on many counts: strength of draftsmanship, effective composition, the color and quality of the painting, and the portrayal of the mood. Riley’s pictures reveal that he is clearly a master of all these, particularly in his use of color. He is at home with almost every subject and period; for instance, some of his finest pictures were painted for the historical Captain Hornblower stories by C. S. Forester in The Saturday Evening Post. His work has appeared in most of the national publications from Reader’s Digest to Life magazine and in a variety of media from line to full color.
Born in Missouri, Riley studied under Thomas Hart Benton at the Kansas City Art Institute. Then he went to New York, where he studied under Frank Vincent DuMond at the Art Students League, and under Harvey Dunn at the Grand Central Art School. In his approach, Riley has successfully amalgamated the viewpoints of teachers whose methods differed radically and has added to these his own personal direction.
Currently he lives and works in Arizona, exhibiting in several western art galleries. He is a charter member of the National Academy of Western Art and a member of the Cowboy Artists of America. In 1993, he was honored with the Eiteljorg Museum Award and given a one-man retrospective show in 199. His paintings are included in the Phoenix Art Museum, West Pint Museum, The White House and the Custer Museum.
