"Fishermen Houses" Landscape Horizontal Oil Painting by Edgar Kiechle 1911-1946
Located in Pasadena, CA
This oil painting made in 1958 expresses perfectly the 1950s period, very minimalist with a vigorous and colorful layering of paint. Edgar O. Kiechle was born in 1911. He was a movie illustrator and a painter. Edgar studied landscape painting with Jean Mannheim, and architecture, and became an excellent watercolorist. After studying at the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles, he interned with leading architects and designers in the area. He worked at most major studios but his career as an illustrator saw him primarily at the Universal Studio Art department. In 1933, Edgar joined Lwerks as a background artist and worked on many films produced by Animated Picture Corporation through 1935. In the summer of 1941, Ed Kiechle joined the Universal Studio Art Department as an illustrator for motion pictures. His career as an illustrator saw him primarily at Universal. He also produced hundreds of oil paintings. His first public showing was in an exhibition of motion picture artists in 1945, His work came to the attention of the motion picture colony and many purchases were made by such notables of his day as Ida Lupino, Hedy Lamar...

Landscape Abstraction - Mid-Century - Twenty Paintings in One
Located in Miami, FL
At the height of Abstraction Expressionism, overlooked Academic Artist John Atherton created a wonderfully complex painting that embodies many of the characteristics of what was going on in Mid-Century American Art. The work is simultaneously abstract as it is representational. Like a Bento Box, it's divided into sections by dividers. On close inspection, each section stands on it's own as a beautiful mini-painting yet coalesces as part of the whole. From a distance, it is eye-pleasing, but as the view gets closer and closer, new structures and details gloriously reveal themselves. This is an important painting and not unlike the work of Joaquín Torres-García. It was done in the last year of the artist's life. Signed lower right. Canvas is relined. Framed size: 30 x 41.25. The work is best viewed with top gallery lights to bring out color. Atherton exhibited at the famous Julien Levy Gallery in New York and his fine art is mainly associated with Magic Realism. He participated in the seminal 1943 Museum of Modern Art exhibition, American Realists and Magic Realists. The Museum of Modern Art has 4 Atherton paintings in its collection. As an Illustrator, Atherton did covers for the Saturday Evening Post, Fortune and Holiday Magazine...

"The Bransford" Antonio Jacobsen, Marine Ship Portrait, Great Lakes Seascape
Located in New York, NY
Antonio Jacobsen The Bransford, 1903 Signed, inscribed "West Hoboken," and dated lower right Oil on canvas 22 x 50 inches Antonio Jacobsen was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, to a family of violin makers. He was an accomplished string player and throughout his life music was to remain an avocation. He studied at Copenhagen's Royal Academy, and emigrated to the the United States in 1871. He frequented the harbor around Battery Park, sketching, until he was hired by the Marvin Safe Company to decorate safes. Subsequently he received commissions from sea captains, ship owners, and steamship companies. The Old Dominion Line, the Fall River Line, and the White Star Line hired him to paint visual records of their entire fleets; he also received commissions from the Clyde, Black Ball, Mallory, Anchor, and the Red Star Lines. Jacobsen's style is often, though not exclusively, characterized by a flattened perspective. He had a complete understanding of ships and achieved great accuracy of detail in his works. In 1878 Jacobsen married; he remained in New York City until 1880, when he moved to Hoboken, New Jersey. His home became a gathering place for marine artists including James Bard, Fred Cozzens, Fred Pansing, James Buttersworth, Worden Wood...

It could be argued that cave walls were the canvases for the world’s first landscape paintings, which depict and elevate natural scenery through art, but there is a richer history to consider.

The Netherlands was home to landscapes as a major theme in painting as early as the 1500s, and ink-on-silk paintings in China featured mountains and large bodies of water as far back as the third century. Greeks created vast wall paintings that depicted landscapes and grandiose garden scenes, while in the late 15th century and early 16th century, landscapes were increasingly the subject of watercolor works by the likes of Leonardo da Vinci and Fra Bartolomeo.

The popularity of religious paintings eventually declined altogether, and by the early 19th century, painters of classical landscapes took to painting out-of-doors (plein-air painting). Paintings of natural scenery were increasingly realistic but romanticized too. Into the 20th century, landscapes remained a major theme for many artists, and while the term “landscape painting” may call to mind images of lush, grassy fields and open seascapes, the genre is characterized by more variety, colors and diverse styles than you may think. Painters working in the photorealist style of landscape painting, for example, seek to create works so lifelike that you may confuse their paint for camera pixels. But if you’re shopping for art to outfit an important room, the work needs to be something with a bit of gravitas (and the right frame is important, too).

Adding a landscape painting to your home can introduce peace and serenity within the confines of your own space. (Some may think of it as an aspirational window of sorts rather than a canvas.) Abstract landscape paintings by the likes of Korean painter Seungyoon Choi or Georgia-based artist Katherine Sandoz, on the other hand, bring pops of color and movement into a room. These landscapes refuse to serve as a background. Elsewhere, Adam Straus’s technology-inspired paintings highlight how our extreme involvement with our devices has removed us from the glory of the world around us. Influenced by modern life and steeped in social commentary, Straus’s landscape paintings make us see our surroundings anew.

Whether you’re seeking works by the world’s most notable names or those authored by underground legends, find a vast collection of landscape paintings on 1stDibs.
