In 1905, Gerrit Beneker began his art career as an illustrator. He married Flora Judd, his high school sweetheart from Grand Rapids and they moved to Brooklyn, NY. Gerrit's early passion was to create an art that would inspire and provide honor to the workingman. As such, he had no interest in painting portraits of pretty women, which were so often seen on the magazine covers of the day. Rather he wanted to seek out workingmen on the bridges, tunnels and skyscrapers of NYC, and paint them in their environments. Signed lower left, 'V. Rorup' for Viggo Julius Rorup (Danish, 1903-1971) and dated 1959. A substantial, Post-Impressionist oil showing a panoramic view of a summer landscape looking an expansive field with scarlet poppies in the foreground and a view towards a range of lilac-tinted hills with a terracotta-tiled farmhouse in the distance. A robust and charming work that exemplifies the artist's characteristically lyrical brushwork, elegantly expressed here in a harmonious palette of turquoise, lavender, peach and other gentle pastel shades. Viggo Rorup was still a student at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts when he made his 1928 debut at the Free Exhibition at the Charlottenborg Palace. Following his graduation in 1930, he moved to Odsherred, where he continued his studies under Karl Bovin. Together, they formed the foundation of the avante-garde group of Modernists, The Corner, that first introduced the principles of Modernism to Danish painting. Rorup traveled widely, including to Italy, Austria, Spain, and most importantly to France, where his studies of the Impressionists and the Post-Impressionists had a significant stylistic impact on his subsequent work. His palette grew brighter, and his earlier defined contours were subsumed into nuances of light. We are pleased to offer a dynamic painting from Rorup's mature period that exemplifies the qualities of his mature work, harmoniously capturing the warmth and color of a summer landscape. On original canvas, not relined. No in-painting. Paul Cornoyer was born in 1864 in St. Louis, Missouri. He studied there at the School of Fine Arts in 1881. His first works were in a Barbizon mode, and his first exhibit was in 1887. In 1889, he went to Paris for further training, studying at the Academie Julien, and returned to St. Louis in 1894. By the early 1890s, his work was more lyrical and Tonal, and he applied this style to subjects such as cityscapes and landscapes. In 1894, he painted a mural depicting the birth of St. Louis for the Planters Hotel in that city. His activities during the next six years were not particularly profitable, however, and the whereabouts of his St. Louis paintings are scarcely known.
