About the Item

Super rare World War Two period scene of St Pauls's Cathedral, London during the Blitz. Very few scenes of the Blitz were painted and this piece dated August 1945 was painted a few months after the end of World War Two. Little is known about the painter but his skill is oblivious in the balance of color, composition, and the unique movement of the flames moving from the buildings. The artist may well have painted this scene after seeing the effects of the V1 and V2 rockets that fell on London during the latter part of the war. My father was a first-hand witness of such things, nearly being killed by a V1 when he was a child in London and my mother remembered the flames coming from buildings during the Blitz and the glow of the flames bouncing off of the buildings. The painting has been recently cleaned and is in its original condition with no restoration. It is framed in a new English handmade frame.
