About the Item
Through aerial perspective, Alexandra Pacula captures glassy facades twisting into the air; or in panoramic views fleeting lights are captured in long silky pulls of paint; Sometimes the picture is broken up by a cacophony of windows represented by fluorescent dashes and dots. Pacula is preoccupied with the atmosphere of the modern city, not the people in them, and yet we feel viscerally present among the architecture and the lights. In this way she invites the viewer to share in her enchantment of the restless metropolis.

Alexandra Pacula (b. 1979, Poland) is a cityscape and landscape artist, focusing on realism through oil painting. She received her BFA from the Mason Gross School of the Arts at Rutgers University, completing her MFA in painting and drawing at Montclair State University in New Jersey.
Pacula is fascinated by light and its transformations. About her painting she says, “My work investigates a world of visual intoxication; it captures moments of enchantment, which are associated with urban nightlife… I recreate the feeling of dizziness and confusion by letting the paint blur and allowing shapes to dissolve. I suggest motion in order to slow down the scene and capture the fleeting moments, which tend to be forgotten.”
Alexandra Pacula’s work is in several public and corporate collections, including Harvard Law School, PACE University, and Tohokushinsha Film Corporation in Tokyo. She has frequently exhibited in solo and group exhibitions.

Alexandra Pacula
Alexandra Pacula paints works exploring the dynamic energy of cities at night. Polish-born, New York-based Pacula simulates the city’s turbulent nocturnal energy with a lexicon of marks all her own; her virtuosic brushwork, vibrant color and fluid gestures transform moving cars into glossy bands of red, while swishy circles become reflective air ducts that sit atop squares of black rooftops. The lines of yellow zigzags mimic the time-lapse vision of the viewer’s own movement and capture a kind of elusive, frenetic energy that powers the city.
