About the Item

Triptych of Highland Mountains and River comprises three oil paintings by famed plein air artist Alfred de Breanski Sr., presenting a studies of the same mountain and river from different perspectives, in different light, color, hue and composition with flocks of sheep, herds of cattle and birds in the distance. In this curated group of paintings we see how moving to various vantage points the naturalistic scene changes, and the artist changes the way we see the view with atmosphere, setting sun and moon rise, and imagining animal life in various locations. For the plein air artist choosing the right place is a big part of how we see the natural world being re-created. As the artist moves from one location to another, the scene shifts in subtle and dramatic ways. Alfred de Breanski (1852-1928) stands the test of time as a technical master of the natural world, traveling long distances to find the perfect spot to paint Highlands and Lochs. He is a master of light as in the glow of a setting sun, reflections on water, the evening or morning sunshine on the mountain peaks. He creates a sense of space and perspective by placing animals, sheep or grazing cows, and birds over water. From 1872 to 1919, Breanski exhibited his work at the Royal Academy, Royal Institute of Oil Painters, Walker Art Gallery and more. His work has been prized in collections since the sale of his work in 1972, aged 20, to the present, with a Breanski work taking pride of place on collector walls and museum halls. These three paintings were completed in 1871, just one year before his first exhibition. Born into an artist family, his brother Gustav became a renowned maritime artist, and his son Alfred Fontville de Breanski, Jr. developed a more colorful and free style, incorporating impressionism in the naturalistic settings. As a grouping of three paintings, all the same size presenting three views of the same mountains, this is a very special offering ideal for University or art/museum research institutions. Two have been sold as a pair in the past with matching frames by Baron Fine Art, Chester, UK. All three are 19" by 11.5". Two have frames that are 24.5' by 16.5' and one measure 24' by 16' in the frame. All three frames are carved wood/gilt in period style frames if not original ones. The paintings and the frames are presented in very good condition. One appears to have been relined in the past. The price is for all three paintings, the Triptych.

Loch Awe and Kilchurn Castle
Located in Hillsborough, NC
Loch Awe and Kilchurn Castle is a landscape oil painting on board by 19th century artist Edward Train (1801 -1866). Train was a British artist, painting mostly landscapes in northern England and, like this one, in Scotland. The painting is signed E. Train (lower left) and dated 1850 or 1856, the last number being too faint to be certain. From 1850 to 1880 Train flourished as an artist, but his work was exhibited in galleries in northeastern England and Edinburgh from the 1830s. Born in Gateshead, Tyneside, Train left to take an apprenticeship with a London engraver. In the 1830s Train traveled with an expedition to the Hebrides and Shetland Islands. Here he became fascinated with the Scottish scenery that would become part of his repertoire of landscape art. Loch Awe lies in the west of Scotland in Argyll and Bute. Kilchurn Castle, built in the 16th century, lies on a peninsula inside the Loch, on the water's edge. Train would have traveled to the Highlands and painted the dramatic scene from the east banks of Loch Awe, across from the Castle. This painting captures the Highland mountains, loch and castle that was very much the ouevre of this artist's work. Train painted the Highlands decades before other renowned landscape artists of the 19th century, such as Alfred de Breanski, Louis Bosworth Hurt, Douglas and Duncan Cameron...
