Frame in good condition This watercolor and ink by Anne Poor (1918-2002) is titled “Two Houses - Lonely Corner.” I have several of Anne Poor’s works from the same time with other names of places (Blowing Point, Island Harbor). As a result, I believe this painting depicts the Lonely Corner area in Anguilla in the Lesser Antilles. The painting measures 8” x 11” (14.25” x 17.25”framed). It is signed in the lower left in ink and titled on the reverse. The painting is in good condition. There is perhaps a bit of fading, more of the ink rather than the watercolor. It is on paper. It is framed in a nice silver metal Kulicke frame The frame is in fair condition with scratches and wear on the finish. It is nicely matted with a linen mat. The mat is in good condition. A native of New York City, Anne Poor studied at the Art Students League while in high school. In the 1930's she helped her stepfather, the artist Henry Varnum Poor, paint murals for the United States Justice Department and the Department of the Interior in Washington. While in the Women's Army Corps in 1943 she gained attention for her depictions of military life, including air evacuation of the wounded in the Pacific. The paintings were exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the National Gallery of Art in Washington. Among her later landscapes was a series done for a 1964 book, ''Greece,'' with a text by Henry Miller. A critically praised New York solo show at Terry Dintenfass in 1992 included paintings of family, friends and pets, living and dead, surrounded by glowing flowers, all done in a distinctive, luminous style. An exhibition of works on paper appeared at the Edward Hopper House Art Center in Nyack last summer. Ms. Poor taught at the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture from 1947 to 1961 and was on the board of trustees from 1963 to '83. She was a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters and the National Academy of Design. Her work is in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum, the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Brooklyn Museum of Art.
