Raised in Oxford, he was born into a family immersed in the arts, with his mother, Jane Hope, being a painter, and his father an academic historian, with artistic lineage tracing through his grandparents as well. Having pursued Mathematics and Physics at the University of Warwick and completing Part III of the Mathematical Tripos at Cambridge University, he furthered his academic journey by obtaining a PhD in theoretical nanoscience at Cambridge.
