Description: This striking coastal watercolour by Tony Herbert (1927–2024) captures the dramatic scenery of Erquy, a fishing town and beach resort on the northern coast of Brittany, France. Dated 1985 and titled verso, the painting depicts a tall seaside villa perched atop a rocky outcrop, overlooking a curving bay with a tidal shoreline. The rugged terrain, mixed with green foliage and sandy flats, reflects the distinct Breton coastal geography.
Erquy is known for its pink sandstone cliffs, scenic GR34 coastal path, and traditional villas with distinctive architectural details — echoed here in the ochre and red brickwork of the solitary house. A low sea wall curves into view in the foreground, suggesting a path or slipway leading down to the beach. The water below is rendered in soft washes of teal and blue, fading into a hazy headland in the distance.
Herbert’s restrained palette and fluid brushwork capture both the solid permanence of the cliffside building and the ephemeral nature of clouds and sea.
