Description: This charming watercolour captures George Adams Lock, a scenic and lesser-known spot along the River Thames. Rendered with fluid brushstrokes and a muted, atmospheric palette, the piece depicts a mill-like structure nestled among trees, with water gently flowing across a sluice gate in the foreground. The cloudy sky and still water evoke a peaceful, almost contemplative moment by the river — a testament to the artist’s sensitivity to light and place.
The scene is believed to be based on the area surrounding the River Thames near Sonning or Henley, where a number of traditional locks and weirs serve both functional and aesthetic roles. George Adams Lock may refer to a local nickname or interpretation, as no widely known lock by that name exists — adding to the curiosity and collectability of the piece.
Tony Herbert (1927–2024) was a British artist known for his fluid watercolours of English life, from city corners to pastoral scenes. This painting exemplifies his skill in capturing both architectural structure and the soft, shifting qualities of water and foliage. The work invites the viewer to imagine the quiet churn of the water, the scent of riverbank trees, and the hum of distant countryside.

Sunday on the Wye [2021]
SOLD UNFRAMED
Please note that insitu images are purely an indication of how a piece may look
The artist comments "I painted 'Sunday on the Wye' after a day on the river canoeing with the family. It was a wonderful day meandering down stream near Symonds Yat. We turned the bend to see other boats congregated on the pebbles for a Sunday picnic. We beached our boat to take in the surroundings. The day was a great experience with sparkling light on the water and the sounds of the water over rocks. A few quick sketches and many photographs allowed me to then work at a large scale in the studio. It was painted with large brushes with watercolour. The chosen colours are blue and green. The painterly brush marks hold an energy and excitement of the days paddling." This work is sold unframed
