Description: This dynamic watercolour by Tony Herbert (1927–2024) captures a lively street café scene outside a branch of Délice de France, with groups of figures seated at outdoor tables under red and blue awnings. While the signage and atmosphere appear distinctly French — with Patisserie Française printed along the canopy and wicker café chairs lining the pavement — closer inspection suggests the location is likely London or another UK city.
The most telling clue is the yellow rear license plate on the parked car at far right — a feature unique to UK vehicles (France uses white plates front and back). Additionally, the branding and commercial signage of Délice de France correspond to the once-popular UK bakery chain, commonly found in British railway stations and high streets from the 1980s onward.
Herbert was based in west London for much of his life, and this painting may reflect his interest in everyday street life near Hammersmith, Richmond, or Ealing — areas known for their mix of cosmopolitan cafés and leafy residential architecture. The use of warm interior light, soft tree shadow, and active figures creates a fluid, observational energy that captures a fleeting urban moment.
