Description: This calm and quietly atmospheric watercolour by Tony Herbert (1927–2024) shows a long, multi-arched bridge spanning a tidal river in Brittany, France. Titled verso “Pont Bel 85,” the work was painted during Herbert’s travels through the region in 1985. A red-upturned boat rests on the grass in the foreground, while a handful of small vessels drift in the shallows nearby.
The bridge, rendered in rhythmic grey and taupe tones, dominates the horizon — its reflection mirrored in the water below. It’s a composition of stillness and restraint: the sky is left nearly blank, lending a sense of calm open air, while the muted palette and low contrast give the work an almost misty quality. The low wall along the bottom right of the painting anchors the viewer’s perspective, guiding the eye diagonally across the scene.
Bridges were a recurring motif in Herbert’s work, symbolising connection and quiet transition. Here, his mastery of watercolour is evident in the softness of the shadows and subtle gradations of colour across land, water, and stone.
