About the Item

Title: View Of Rooftops And Tower Block With Tree London 1979 Watercolour By Tony Herbert (1927-2024) Medium: Watercolor on paper, unframed Size: 13.25 inches (height) x 10.25 inches (width) Condition: good, will some signs on wear consistent with aging Provenance: From a large private collection of this artists work, Oxford, England Description: This striking urban composition captures the layered rooftops and backyard outbuildings of a London neighbourhood in the late 1970s, painted in watercolour with bold structural clarity and a keen eye for architectural rhythm. The piece is signed and dated ‘77 in the lower right corner, confirming its creation in 1977 — a period when urban redevelopment and the tension between high- and low-rise housing were becoming central to the visual language of the city. Foregrounded by a leafy tree with dense foliage, the view looks toward a row of terraced houses, their angled roofs and chimney stacks drawing the eye upward to a towering concrete block in the background. The high-rise is rendered in grey tones, its grid-like facade creating a visual counterpoint to the smaller, more characterful buildings below. Laundry lines, red doors, blue-painted sheds, and antennae signal the lived-in nature of the space, giving a sense of both community and containment. The artist’s use of line is notable here — carefully inked outlines give the piece a near-architectural quality, while the brushwork remains fresh and expressive, particularly in the skyscape and tree canopy. The palette balances earthy browns and greys with bright accents and a wash of blue sky, capturing the gritty realism and occasional charm of postwar residential London. This is a valuable example of urban observational painting, offering insight into everyday architecture and city life as it was experienced in 1970s Britain.
