About the Item
Autumn landscape attributed to Arvid Mauritz Lindström (1849-1923)
On a path winding between trees and stones beside a lake, a woman is walking. The work is painted in a relatively free and sensitive manner, with a sense of movement, balanced light, and beautiful autumn colors on a late afternoon as the sun begins to set. Possible traces of a signature can be seen in the lower left, “AM…”. This painting is probably an early work, created before Lindström’s departure for London in 1880.
Arvid Mauritz Lindström was born in Björksta parish, Västmanland, Sweden, in 1849. He studied at the Royal Swedish Academy of Arts in Stockholm between 1869 and 1872, followed by further training in Munich and Paris. In 1877 he became an agré (associate member) of the Academy, and later, in 1886, a member of the Konstnärsförbundet (the Artists’ Association).
During the 1880s he lived in London, where he exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy. In 1885 he was also involved with Opponenterna (The Opponents), a group of Swedish artists advocating reform of academic traditions. Works such as "Motiv från Scotland" (Motif from Scotland) were purchased by the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm.
After returning to Sweden in 1889, Lindström settled in Engelsberg, where he built Villa Hvilan together with architect Isak Gustaf Clason. The house became a meeting place for artists, and Lindström also maintained close contact with Carl Larsson, who painted his portrait.
Lindström is primarily known for his atmospheric landscapes, often showing twilight, autumn, and winter scenes with strong effects of light and color. His brushwork combines naturalistic detail with impressionistic overtones.
His works are represented in several Swedish collections, including the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm and Västerås museum. He died in Stockholm in 1923.
