About the Item
BENJAMIN WILLIAMS LEADER
Benjamin W Leader is one of the most sought after Victorian landscape painters and a must for any collector. With some paintings realising over £100 000 in auction this fully signed, titled and dated piece fulfills every requirement that is needed for a perfect collectors piece. This painting was painted at the height of his prowess, 4 years before he was made a full member of the Royal Academy. It was also painted around his favoured spots in North Wales.
Canvas Size: 24 x 36" (60 x 90cm)
Outside Frame Size: 31 x 43" (77.5 x 107.5cm)
1831 – 1923
He was a Worcester landscape and coastal painter. He changed his name from Benjamin Williams but added the surname Leader to avoid confusion with the Williams family, to whom he was not related. He married Mary Eastlake and was father to Benjamin Eastlake Leader.
He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1857 – 1922.
His subjects were usually set in Scotland or the Midlands, but he was especially fond of the landscapes around Betwys-y-Coed, Wales.
Leader’s early pictures show some Pre-Raphaelite influence, but he later developed a broader, more naturalistic style, which was enormously successful.
Leader’s works have always been admired for their literalness and ‘truth to nature’.
He became an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1883 and a full member in 1898.

ALFRED De BREANSKI Snr
Alfred De Breanski was a distinguished landscape painter who became famous for his resplendent views of the Welsh and Scottish Highlands; he also painted many views of the Thames. Often bathed in a flood of golden light, these landscapes usually feature water and cattle or sheep on grassy banks; sometimes a solitary figure is seen the distance.
Breanski belonged to the real stamp of those landscape painters who nimbly seized moments of the day. He had a great passion for the Highlands and perhaps more than any other, caught the atmospheric influences of the undulating landscape.

John Constable
Constable was born in East Bergholt, Suffolk on 11 June 1776 and attended a school in Lavenham and his father hoped he would enter the church. His father was adamant that he would not be a painter as a profession. He met a local man named John Dunthorne who painted local scenes, mainly in nearby fields. His love of all things natural stemmed from this. Later he copied works by Girtin from a book that was lent to him by Sir George Beaumont...
