Original watercolor painting of a farmhouse at the top of a hill by Bertram Spencer (American, 1918-1992). A small farmhouse sits at the crest of a hill, surrounded by lush green trees and bushes. A barbed wire fence runs up along the ridge of the hill towards the house. Above the house, dramatic grey clouds swirl up into the sky.
Unsigned, but acquired with a collection of the artist's work.
Presented in an off white mat.

Bertram Spencer (American, 1918-1992) was an artist and art teacher originally from Talent, Oregon. Spencer studied at Pomona and Claremont Colleges, earning his Master’s in Fine Arts. He taught art at Watsonville High School from 1950 until 1972. Spencer founded the Pajaro Valley Artists Group and was best known for renovations to the Santa Cruz Museum in 1963, where he painted extensive murals of Native American History.

Born in Santa Rosa, California to a pioneering California family, Elizabeth Hoen was known for her watercolor paintings, many of them landscapes, in impressionist style. Her father, Berthold Hoen started a trading post in the Carillo adobe, the first building erected in the Sonoma Valley. He also helped survey and lay out the city of Santa Rosa.
Elizabeth Hoen is not only the first painter to have their work cataloged into the Sonoma County Museum’s collection, but she was also a prolific artist in California in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and maintained a studio during a period when California art was largely dominated by men.
