Artist Biography and Statement:
"I am focused on the visual experience working from life and in the studio to develop the surface quality of a painting that is rich in texture. I often play with how the two relate or struggle for the viewers attention, how the surface language takes you from the image and into the paint and brings about a language all its own in structure and abstraction through the marks."
Billyo O’Donnell thrives on his passion for creating paintings en plein air that mark the exact point in time at which his inspiration happens. He thinks of his paintings as a diary of his artwork telling a story of himself at that moment. When he paints, it reminds him of how he must react spontaneously to inspiration in life or chance losing that significant experience. And, it is his easy nature in his style of living, synchronizing with the ease he feels when creating his works of art, that make those moments unique.
When asked about the greatest pleasure in his profession, Billyo answered, “It’s the experience of painting outside. The snow, strong wind, cold, muggy heat, mosquitoes, they all remind me of life and how we must stay focused and keep pushing on. As I think about masses, color, relationships, the harmony of the piece, value, strokes and textures and combine them with the energy of the land and the environment around me, it transcends the quality of staying focused and persevering in life.”

Billyo O'Donnell
Billyo O’Donnell’s childhood was spent west of St. Louis along the Missouri River where the hills rise up out of the valley to meet the plains with eight siblings on a small family farm. Surrounded by two large landowners of more than 14,000 acres of nature influenced his known world. Spending most of the summer barefoot, except for Sundays, O'Donnell often made elaborate sculptures from pond mud for his brothers to smash. O'Donnell was always creating. At the age of 18, O'Donnell had an epiphany during an accident guiding him to pursue his love of painting. Earning a BFA degree, he met his love Peggy, found work as a staff artist at Maritz Motivation for 12 years while receiving many national and international awards for his paintings. His family grew with three children Megan, Timothy and Erin. Invited to participate in the 1995 San Juan Capistrano Mission Paint Out as one of five guest artists from across America. O'Donnell has then continued to participate in plein air events for the last 19 years. He has received the highest awards at many of America’s prestigious plein air invitationals that often included many of America’s top landscape painters.

ABOUT THE ARTIST: Lu Haskew 1921-2009
"Life is good to me. Being able to go to my studio five days weekly and paint for several hours, living in a supportive community, having family and friends who encourage me--all have contributed to helping me become an artist. Being fortunate to study with some of the artists I admire has kept me painting from the garden, people and my favorite things.
