About the Item

Boris Vassiloff, Russian/American (1906 - 2000) Artist Boris Vassiloff was born on March 24, 1906 to Julia Nikolaevna and Boris Ivanovich Vassiloff in Russia. He died peacefully on Dec. 4, 2000 in Sea Cliff. Boris' first teacher was his father, followed by a Russian government school and three years in the best art academy in Leningrad. Being unable to continue his studies and having no possibilities of going to Western Europe, the artist went to Mongolia to his uncle, Simion Vassiloff. From that moment begins the travels of the young painter, never separated from his sketch book and paint box. After Mongolia, Vassiloff traveled to Manchuria, China, Indo-China, Hong Kong, Ceylon, Djibouti, France, Italy, Spain, Portugal and finally Canada and America. His studio is filled with sketches and studies from more than 40 countries. Vassiloff also executed a plethora of commissioned works-frescoes in private homes, chateaux and hotels. In 1937, he painted the ikonostasi, (the screen in front of the altar in an Orthodox Christian Church), of the Russian Orthodox Church in Bizerta. Vassiloff's list of museum exhibitions is formidable. Boris Vassiloff eventually made his way to Sea Cliff. Vassiloff had tried to stay in contact with his family during and after the Russian Revolution. His older brother was killed by the Bolsheviks; his younger brother was sent to a prison camp for 20 years. His sister was put into a hard labor camp for many years but, despite that experience, she was able to play the piano as a vocal accompanist. In Sea Cliff, Vassiloff had art students come to him for advice and direction. Many of them are still grateful to him some 20 to 30 years later. He had many customers come to his open house events on weekends and was happiest while working in his studio. Vassiloff was an avid chess player and had won a championship in Paris during the 1940s and in other competitions later in his life on Long Island. The Sea Cliff community knew Vassiloff's work very well as he had participated in the village's art tours since their inception.

Located in Surfside, FL
Watercolor painting of Shul interior in Tzfas, Safed Israel. MORDECHAI AVNIEL Minsk, Belarus, b. 1900, d. 1989 Mordecai Dickstein (later Avniel) was born in 1900 in Minsk, present-day Belarus. He studied fine arts in Yekaterinburg, Russia (1913–19) and at the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design, Jerusalem (1923). Avniel immigrated to Palestine in 1921 where he first worked as a pioneer in citrus plantations near Petah Tikva. In 1923, at the urging of Boris Schatz, he went to Jerusalem to further his art studies at Bezalel. He later taught painting and sculpture at the school, and served a term as director of the Small Sculpture Section of the Sculpture Department (1924–28). From 1935 on, Avniel lived in Haifa. Avniel was also a lawyer and a founding partner of the Haifa firm Avniel, Salomon & Company. Avniel regularly showed his work in group exhibitions of the Painters and Sculptors' Association of Israel. He was awarded the Herman Struck Prize (1952), Tenth Anniversary Prize for Watercolours, Ramat Gan (1958), Histadrut Prize (1961), and First Prize Haifa Municipality (1977). He represented Israel at the 1958 Venice Biennale and the 1962 International Art Seminar at Fairleigh Dickinson University. Avniel was a member of the Artists' Colony in Safed and maintained a studio on Mount Carmel. Mordechai Avniel is best known for his deft and singular landscape work. His works are held in numerous museums and collections both in Israel and abroad, including the Metropolitan Museum, New York and the Carnegie Institute, Pittsburgh, PA. Roman Facade, Italy (Exquisite 19th-c. Original Watercolor, Signed)
Located in New Orleans, LA
Sorry for the reflections on the glass, but I didn't want to take this lovely frame apart. The close-ups are much better. This is a highly accomplished, superbly detailed watercolor of a the facade of a building in Rome, depicting Corinthian columns, a frieze and a free-standing tributary sculpture above. Image area itself is 10.5" x 6.25", framed size is 19.5" x 14". Matted and presented in a pretty antique wood frame that has some flaws from an apparently long history but is perfectly serviceable, as you can see. Exquisite detail, so hard to accomplish with watercolor. Came from august Houston...
